Game of Thrones vet Sophie Turner would “love” to play Sansa again (under one condition)
As a gamer who’s seen more episodes of Game of Thrones than I’ve had hot dinners, let me tell you, Sophie Turner’s portrayal of Sansa Stark was nothing short of epic. Now, five years after the series finale, it seems that Westeros still holds a special place in her heart.
Sophie Turner gained widespread recognition for her outstanding portrayal of Sansa Stark in all eight seasons of “Game of Thrones.” The British actress, now 28 years old, has since taken on other notable roles, but none have been as transformative as her work on HBO’s hit series. As she promotes her current project, portraying real-life jewel thief Joan Hannington in ITV’s “Joan,” Turner has shared insights into what attracted her to the role, managing motherhood (a topic she had to clarify on Instagram), and, naturally, her thoughts on “Thrones” years after its conclusion.
Five years have passed since Game of Thrones concluded its run, and though the series finale didn’t satisfy everyone, it has undeniably become one of television’s greatest achievements and continues to be a cultural phenomenon. It’s unclear if Sophie Turner has watched the spin-off show House of the Dragon, although her former spouse Joe Jonas has, but it’s clear that Turner hasn’t completely let go of Westeros. However, this doesn’t necessarily mean she’d be open to returning for another Game of Thrones installment. In other words, her answer is more like a “possibility” than a definite yes.
Sophie Turner wonders what Sansa is up to after Game of Thrones
During an interview with Variety about her latest series, “Joan,” Turner was asked if she might revisit “Game of Thrones” in the future. While she didn’t dismiss the possibility, she made it clear that certain conditions would need to be met for her to return: “Perhaps… but only if it were with the same cast and crew, otherwise I wouldn’t go back, and that would just be Season 9, and I don’t think we’re going to have a Season 9. However, I loved playing Sansa, and I often wonder what she might be doing now.
Where would she be five years later, what would she be doing? Would she still be queen in the North? Would she be a good ruler? Would there be some other kind of terrible war that’s happened? I’d love to see it.
We’d love to see it, too! That said, I think most Thrones fans would be in agreement that the conditions would have to be right. The same cast and crew, yes, but also a strong enough story that would warrant a revisit. Turner’s former co-star Kit Harington, who played Jon Snow for all eight seasons, tried to get a spinoff up and running about his character, but it was ultimately shelved. The English actor, 37, has explained that they just couldn’t get the story right.
During a chat with Collider in August, the actor from Industry expressed: “For us, it was essentially about not discovering the appropriate story and not finding something valuable enough to pull me back and keep me engaged. It became less logical, as time passed, so we decided to withdraw our involvement.
Though it would be delightful to revisit characters such as Sansa and Jon on my screen, it seems wise that there isn’t a new Game of Thrones series being planned. Given that we already have spinoff shows like House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, along with others in development, it might be more engaging to explore these new stories rather than returning to the original series.
Regarding where you might catch up with Turner, her six-part crime series titled “Joan” made its debut on ITV on September 29, inspired by a true tale of a housewife who became a thief. For those in the U.S., the show is set to premiere this week on October 2 on The CW. Given Turner’s exceptional talent, it’s likely worth watching even just for her captivating performance.
