Game of Thrones vet Kristian Nairn likes House of the Dragon, but thinks season 2 was "different"

As a gamer who has spent countless hours immersed in the intricate world of Westeros, I can confidently say that HBO’s spinoff series, House of the Dragon, has been an exciting journey, albeit with its fair share of ups and downs. The first season was nothing short of spectacular, offering a fresh perspective on the Targaryen dynasty while maintaining the high-quality production values that made Game of Thrones a global phenomenon.

Approximately five years have passed since the conclusion of “Game of Thrones”, yet HBO has continued to ignite interest with spinoff series such as “House of the Dragon“, taking place a century prior to the original tale in Westeros, where dragons were still abundant. The initial season was warmly received by fans, who delighted in encountering fresh characters wielding power, while the second season garnered mixed reviews, though it generally held its ground, particularly episodes like “The Red Dragon and the Gold”, which showcased an unparalleled onscreen dragon-versus-dragon battle.

Kristian Nairn, known for his role as Hodor in Game of Thrones, has also noticed a distinction between the first and second seasons of House of the Dragon. However, he made it clear that he’s not criticizing the prequel series. He told Screen Rant, “I do compare them, it’s like different stages in college or school. We are like the older generation. I recently met Tom Glynn-Carney, who plays Aegon on House of the Dragon, and I was impressed watching him handle PR work. Yes, I’m proud of them. They don’t need my pride, but season 1 was exceptional. It was almost as good as Game of Thrones. It felt like a continuation, even though it’s set in the past, it seemed like just the next episode or something.

I don’t think the same about season 2, but I can say that without being negative. I don’t think it’s bad. I do really like it, but to me it’s something different. I don’t know if I’m wrong about this, but I’ve spoke to a few people about it and I don’t think I’m too far off the mark. It just feels different. There’s a vibe, there’s a heavy Game of Thrones vibe throughout the show. And to me it’s just different. But I’m still going to keep watching. I think it just feels a bit different to me. That’s all. I’m sure that could be twisted into the fact that I fu**ing hate it, but I don’t. I really like it. I love fantasy in all forms and I’m loving the dragons in this one. That’s incredible.

As a devoted fan, I can’t help but share my thoughts on George R.R. Martin’s recent criticisms of ‘House of the Dragon.’ Being the genius behind the books that inspired both ‘Game of Thrones’ and this new series, his opinions carry significant weight. It seems that some alterations made to the source material in ‘House of the Dragon’ pushed it into territories that ‘Game of Thrones’ never approached – a claim I tend to side with.

Although the situation may seem bleak now, there’s still opportunity to change it for the better. In the meantime, a third season of “House of the Dragon” is planned for release in 2026. Additionally, another “Game of Thrones” spinoff titled “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” is set to premiere in 2025.
