The historical drama Medici: Masters of Florence, starring Richard Madden, is finding a new audience and topping charts on demand, years after it first aired.
According to FlixPatrol, the series Medici has been performing very well on the Apple TV Store charts. It unexpectedly launched on December 30th at number 2 in the U.S. and quickly climbed to the top spot, where it stayed for three days. As of January 3, 2026, it moved to number 3, with the popular series Landman taking first place and the anime favorite Cowboy Bebop coming in second.
The TV series Medici recently reappeared on music charts, likely because of a limited-time sale on iTunes. The complete series box set was available for only $8.99, but it’s now back to its regular price of $19.99.
The series Medici tells the story of the powerful Medici family, an Italian banking dynasty that rose to prominence in Florence during the 1400s. Over three seasons and 24 episodes, the show explores key moments in the family’s history and how they influenced Italy’s political and artistic landscape during the Renaissance.
Richard Madden played Cosimo de’ Medici, who led the family following his father’s death. He was the main star of the first season. Later, Daniel Sharman (known from Fear the Walking Dead) took over as Lorenzo the Magnificent and starred in seasons two and three.
Besides Dustin Madden, the first season of Medici featured Stuart Martin (known from Babylon), Annabel Sholey, Guido Caprino, Alessandro Sperduti, and Ken Bones. The season followed Cosimo as he took his father’s place on the Signoria, inherited the family bank, and investigated his father’s murder. Throughout this, Florence faced challenges like war with Milan and the devastating Black Plague.
When the first season of Medici premiered, critics were divided, giving it a 50% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. However, viewers generally liked it much more, with an 83% approval rating based on over 100 reviews. While Season 2 hasn’t received enough critical reviews to earn a score, audiences gave it a 78% rating, and Season 3 is similarly rated at 73%.
Richard Madden Now Leads Prime Video’s Hit Spy Thriller
Richard Madden has consistently landed leading roles in TV and movies after appearing in shows like Game of Thrones and Medici. He played Ikaris in a 2021 film, and most recently starred in the 2024 neo-noir mystery Killer Heat.
Richard Madden first gained widespread recognition on television with his leading role in the 2018 BBC thriller Bodyguard. He then starred as Mason Kane, a highly skilled spy who loses his memory and identity, in the series Citadel. The show was renewed for a second season in 2023, with Joe Russo directing, though it doesn’t have a release date yet.
