Game of Thrones star Sophie Turner officially in talks to play Lara Croft in Tomb Raider show

As a movie buff with over two decades of experience under my belt, I must say that the news about Sophie Turner potentially playing Lara Croft in the upcoming Amazon Prime Video series has me thoroughly intrigued!

Approximately two weeks ago, we shared news about Sophie Turner, known for her role as Sansa Stark on Game of Thrones, being a potential choice to portray the main character Lara Croft from the popular Tomb Raider video game series in an upcoming live-action show on Amazon Prime Video. During that time, Turner was auditioning alongside actresses like Lucy Boynton, who has appeared in Murder on the Orient Express and Bohemian Rhapsody. According to Deadline, Turner is now in discussions to secure the role, suggesting she has been selected for the part!

It appears that Sophie Turner might be taking on the role of Lara Croft, though it’s not officially confirmed yet since negotiations could still potentially falter. However, it seems very likely that she will step into the shoes previously worn by Angelina Jolie and Alicia Vikander in the live-action portrayal of the treasure-hunting character, provided no unforeseen circumstances arise.

Jolie and Vikander portrayed Lara Croft on the silver screen; however, it’s the Amazon series, being overseen by Phoebe Waller-Bridge (creator of “Fleabag”), that will introduce Lara in live-action for television for the very first time. In contrast, an animated series titled “Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft” is currently streaming on Netflix.

It’s clear that Lara Croft is highly sought-after and versatile. Originally introduced in the 1996 video game “Tomb Raider,” she has since been revived multiple times across various platforms such as games, movies, and comics. Typically portrayed as a British archaeologist traversing the globe to explore ancient sites or raid tombs (depending on preference), her appeal endures over time.

As of right now, no release date has been announced for the upcoming Tomb Raider show. They’ve only recently cast their lead actor, so it’s clear that production hasn’t fully kicked off yet. Given this timeline, it looks like we might be seeing Turner plundering her first tomb around 2026.
