Game Of Thrones star Indira Varma, 51, says on-screen opportunities for older women are ‘getting smaller and smaller’
As a devoted admirer, I’d like to share the sentiments of Indira Varma, a captivating talent from Game of Thrones. She recently expressed her concerns about the dwindling chances for mature actresses in the industry, stating that they are becoming ‘increasingly scarce and limited’.
As a die-hard admirer, I can’t help but share the words of this extraordinary actress, aged 51, who’s graced our screens in captivating performances from series like Luther and Obi-Wan Kenobi. She revealed that only a select few are fortunate enough to secure such roles.
She expressed a desire for more narratives focusing on older women, while also mentioning that as she grows older, she experiences less compulsion to appear exceptionally attractive.
In the seventh Mission: Impossible movie, Varma expressed a desire for similar on-screen chances as she experiences in her theater roles, stating that she truly enjoys such opportunities.
She expressed a preference for characters that experience deep emotional development, rather than simply serving as vessels for delivering information.
Actress Ms. Varma, who has been honored with an Olivier award, is set to perform alongside famous Hollywood actor Rami Malek in a fresh London staging of Oedipus at the Old Vic Theatre.
As I shared during an interview with The Sunday Times’ Culture magazine, I’ve noticed that the options available to women in my age group seem to be dwindling more and more.
We’d like to see more narratives focused on elderly women, just as there have been more stories about people of color in recent times.
She also talked about the way female actors are always under scrutiny over the way they look.
The actress said: ‘We’re still obsessed with whether or not someone’s attractive.
It surprises me to admit it, but growing older has its perks. For one, I’m in good health, and I’ve never felt stronger. As I age, I find less and less pressure to conform to societal norms of beauty for women.
She also admitted she would like to be offered different types of roles in her film and TV work.
Ms Varma told the magazine: ‘I’d love opportunities on screen that I get on stage.
I prefer stories with depth and emotion, ones that show characters’ internal struggles as well as external events. Shallow narratives focusing solely on expository details bore me.
In 2019, I was honored with an Olivier Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role, thanks to my performance in the Noel Coward play “Present Laughter.
Last year she starred as Lady Macbeth alongside Ralph Fiennes in a UK production of the play.
Her first major film role was in the 1996 move Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love.
For many years, well-known figures in Hollywood have frequently criticized the age discrimination that often pushes actresses into less prominent roles once they reach their forties.
Notable celebrities such as Nicole Kidman, Julia Roberts, Helen Mirren, and Jamie Lee Curtis have frequently voiced their opinions in public forums, emphasizing that talent isn’t tied to an expiration date and stardom surpasses the confines of youth.
Regardless of their endeavors, it often happens that major female characters are given to younger actresses, while those over forty are frequently relegated to secondary roles portrayed as dowdy or reduced to brief, insignificant appearances.
Or:
In spite of the attempts made, it’s typically found that significant leading roles are bestowed upon young women, with actresses in their forties being usually assigned less important parts that are either frumpy or diminished to trivial guest spots.
Yet, the latest Golden Globe Awards seem to indicate a shift happening – with seasoned actors in their middle age receiving recognition for their daring, stereotype-breaking, and deeply layered performances in this year’s major productions.
At the recent event, it was the veteran actresses from Hollywood who once again shone brightly as they took home seven out of the prestigious Best Actress awards, all of whom were over forty years old.
On this notable list was Demi Moore. At the age of 62, she earned her very first acting award, a recognition that had eluded her for many years despite being frequently overlooked as a performer in light popcorn films.
