A new spin-off of *Game of Thrones* is coming, and it’s different. The big question now is whether fans of the original series will like these changes.
According to *Entertainment Weekly*, the new series *A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms* will have a simpler opening than *Game of Thrones* and *House of the Dragon*. Instead of a detailed opening sequence, each episode will begin with a title card featuring medieval-style text. Ira Parker, a co-creator and writer on the show, explained that the elaborate openings of the previous series didn’t fit the feel of *A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms*.
Parker explained that every detail of the show, including the opening titles, reflected the main character, Dunk’s, personality. Unlike the grand, orchestral title sequences of shows like *Game of Thrones* and *House of the Dragon*, which featured a large and impressive score by Ramin Djawadi, Dunk prefers things straightforward and unpretentious. He’s a simple person who gets straight to the point and isn’t interested in extravagance.
The show is inspired by the Tales of Dunk and Egg stories written by George R.R. Martin. Originally planned for a late 2025 release, Warner Bros. Discovery announced in May that it would now premiere in January 2026.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Co-Creator Reveals Changes to Title Sequence
The series stars Peter Claffey as Ser Duncan the Tall and Dexter Sol Ansell as his squire, Egg. It’s set about 100 years before the events of *Game of Thrones* and 100 years after *House of the Dragon*, following the pair’s adventures as they journey across Westeros. According to the official description, the story takes place during the reign of the Targaryen dynasty, when dragons are still a recent memory, and promises great challenges, formidable enemies, and thrilling experiences for this unlikely duo.
The first season of *A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms* adapts George R.R. Martin’s novella *The Hedge Knight* (1998), which is part of a series that also includes *The Sworn Sword* (2003) and *The Mystery Knight* (2010). Currently, Season 3 of *House of the Dragon* is being filmed and is also planned for release in 2026.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will premiere in January 2026 on HBO and HBO Max.
