As a 90’s kid who grew up with VHS tapes and dial-up internet, seeing Sophie Turner’s throwback Halloween costume this year took me back to a time when “The Matrix” was not just a movie but a cultural phenomenon. It’s fascinating to see how styles from our pop culture past get reimagined in the present, like an old cassette tape being played on a modern MP3 player.

During the spooky Halloween time, both everyday folks like us and renowned celebrities with massive followings on social media are all getting ready to don their costumes.

It seems there might be a specific individual I’m referring to: Sophie Turner, famously known for her role as Sansa Stark in “Game of Thrones,” recently shared her Halloween 2024 costume choice. The outfit appears to emulate a fashion trend prevalent in the early 2000s, when shopping malls were teeming with Hot Topic stores and cell phones had physical buttons that required manual compression. Turner’s costume this year seems to be themed around “The Matrix.

In a more simplified and conversational manner: She’s wearing skin-tight black leather, a long leather trench coat, dark shades, and carrying guns – very much reminiscent of Neo or Trinity from the Matrix movies. Everyone in those films dressed similarly. If you’re battling robots in a world many believe is real but is actually simulated, it’s crucial they can’t spot your eyes whites.

I find this intriguing as it brings back memories. Since The Matrix was released in 1999, this style has skyrocketed in popularity and then dwindled to the point where someone like Turner, who was a toddler when the film debuted, adopts it as a nod to an era past. It’s gone from being trendy to becoming a nostalgic novelty, reflecting the natural lifespan of pop culture. And props to Turner for maintaining the sunglasses throughout the evening, even in dim settings; it’s great to see such dedication.

Lately, Turner has been garnering acclaim for her portrayal of the true-life diamond thief Joan Hannington in the series titled “Joan“. This show aired on British television earlier this year and is now being shown on The CW in the U.S. Furthermore, she expressed her interest in reprising her role as Sansa Stark, if suitable conditions arise.
