Game of Thrones prequel writer confirms Aegon the Conqueror show is still a go

As a film enthusiast who has spent countless hours immersed in the rich tapestry of Westeros, I must admit that the prospect of yet another Game of Thrones project is both exhilarating and somewhat daunting. Having witnessed the breathtaking highs and heart-wrenching lows of the original series, followed by the captivating prequel House of the Dragon, the idea of delving further into this fantastical world is undeniably enticing.

Here’s a sneak peek into the latest development on the upcoming “Game of Thrones” project, though I feel a bit self-conscious sharing this, here goes: Mattson Tomlin, the writer tasked with shaping an idea for a “Game of Thrones” prequel centered around Aegon the Conqueror, recently shared an adorable dragon image on his Twitter. Take a look:

300 years prior to the storyline in Game of Thrones (and more than a century before House of the Dragon), there lived a man named Aegon Targaryen, who was the first among many significant figures in Westerosi history to bear this name. He was renowned as a dragon-rider. Accompanied by his dragon-riding sisters Rhaenys and Visenya, he conquered the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros and consolidated them into a single realm, with himself as its monarch. By melting down the swords of his vanquished adversaries, he fashioned the Iron Throne, becoming the inaugural king of Westeros.

During one stage of his conquest campaign, Aegon, riding atop his dragon Balerion, approaches Harrenhal Castle – then the grandest and most magnificent castle in the Seven Kingdoms. However, Harren the Black refuses to submit to Aegon, so the dragon king sets fire to the entire structure, incinerating Harren and his sons within. This act of destruction transformed Harrenhal into the dilapidated ruin we recall from Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon, a fact that Tomlin might be hinting at with his small GIF.

Previously, Tomlin expressed his method for constructing the series, which is rooted in the initial chapters of George R.R. Martin’s book “Fire & Blood”. In his words, “My focus is on honoring George and the text while still maintaining a compelling narrative. The characters must embark on a journey, undergo transformation, and progress from a beginning to a middle to an end. I have to decipher how to accomplish this using the hints provided in the book and interpret this real history into a vivid show that people will enjoy, not despise.

One of many possible “Game of Thrones” spinoffs currently being considered by HBO is the Aegon show, but only two have been confirmed for airing: “House of the Dragon,” which is already broadcasting, and “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms,” scheduled to debut its first season in 2025. The future of the Aegon show remains uncertain; it may eventually make it to our TV screens or HBO might choose not to proceed with it at some point. We’ll keep an eye on developments to find out what happens for sure.
