Game of Thrones one of 4 franchises WBD wants to make video games based on

As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I have to say that Warner Bros. Discovery’s focus on expanding their franchises into various mediums, including video games, is a move I wholeheartedly support. The success they’ve seen with Hogwarts Legacy and the potential of the Game of Thrones universe in gaming is nothing short of exhilarating for us fans.

Warner Bros. Discovery, the company behind HBO, is emphasizing its focus on franchise development, as expressed by CEO David Zaslav. This shift in strategy can be seen with the extension of the “Game of Thrones” universe through spinoffs such as “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms,” and the creation of a standalone series for The Penguin, which originated from the 2022 movie “The Batman.” Furthermore, Warner Bros. Discovery is aiming to extend these franchises beyond television and movies, venturing into other mediums such as video games.

To date, the company has experienced victories as well as setbacks. For instance, “Hogwarts Legacy” emerged as the top-selling video game in 2023, yet “Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League” failed to impress critics and viewers upon its release earlier this year. Despite these ups and downs, the company remains determined, with renowned journalist Geoff Keighley revealing their plan to concentrate their gaming endeavors on four primary franchises.

Essentially, our previous assessment of WBD was similar, but we’re optimistic they’ve picked up some insights from the flops like “Kill the Justice League”. Among the series on their list, “Game of Thrones” has had the least adaptation into video games. The most successful adaptations thus far have likely been Telltale’s six-episode game series, which created a choose-your-own-adventure style narrative. So far, the only other offerings have been low-quality mobile games such as “Game of Thrones: Conquest”.

If HBO wants to excite fans of “Game of Thrones”, one approach might be developing a captivating, solo-player game where players can engage in battles and political maneuvers, striving for power within Westeros, with a comprehensive narrative encompassing a start, development, and conclusion. However, such games are costly and laborious to produce, offering limited opportunities for revenue beyond the initial sale. Given HBO’s focus on these factors, it may not be likely that we’ll see this type of game in the near future.

Instead, Hogwarts Legacy resembles the type of game we’re talking about, and it’s their most significant triumph in gaming so far. Perhaps this will guide them towards making the right decisions.
