Game of Thrones: Kingsroad video game will feature “bloody and sexual scenes”
As a cinephile with a penchant for all things Game of Thrones and a veteran of countless mobile games, I find myself intrigued by Netmarble’s latest offering – Game of Thrones: Kingsroad. The trailer has certainly sparked my interest, with its promise of an open-world adventure beyond the Wall as Jon Snow.
Video games inspired by “Game of Thrones” have been a mixed bag throughout the years. While the narrative-driven adventure games from Telltale gained quite a following, many other releases such as mobile games like “Game of Thrones: Conquest” haven’t managed to make a significant mark.
Netmarble, a South Korean gaming company, is giving another shot at creating “Game of Thrones: Kingsroad“. This game appears to be leaning towards an action-adventure genre. In the trailer (available above), you can see yourself battling enemies beyond the Wall, as Jon Snow. Moreover, developer Moon Jun-ki hints that there are many other exciting features yet to be revealed.
At the G-Star 2024 gaming convention, Moon stated that they aimed to deliver content that fans would enjoy by focusing on an open-world experience with familiar characters. The game will maintain the gritty and sensual aspects characteristic of the original series, as Moon explained. Executive producer Jang Hyun-il assured that while the main characters’ story might deviate from the original one, it will still resonate as a “Game of Thrones” narrative due to its inherent violence and sexuality. The team is working on integrating these distinct features into the game’s central plot.
Beyond just sex and battles, “Game of Thrones” offers much more depth, yet those elements are indeed integral to the overall experience. The intriguing question lies in whether the mobile version, “Game of Thrones: Kingsroad,” can break free from the limitations typically associated with mobile games and reach a broader audience. Interestingly, it’s not only playable on mobile devices but also on computers. The developers have highlighted that the game supports manual controls as opposed to automatic ones, which is usually found in similar titles. However, whether this change alone will generate significant excitement among players remains uncertain.
Game of Thrones: Kingsroad will come out in the West first, since “Asian gamers tend to consume content faster”
As a passionate movie and gaming enthusiast, I’m excited to share that our team is currently 70% through the development of Game of Thrones: Kingsroad. However, there are still some kinks we need to iron out before it’s ready for release. Unfortunately, we don’t have a specific launch date set yet. What I can tell you is that our primary focus is on bringing this game to western countries first because we’ve noticed that Asian gamers tend to consume content at a faster pace.
We plan to launch in the West first, make any changes to the game, and release in the [Asian] region soon after.
I cannot vouch for the truth or veracity of that statement. Korea JoongAng Daily posits that this release strategy “should give comparatively slower Western players a decent head start, allowing them to finish the title before too many competitors across the globe have plowed through it and spoiled the material.” Should I be offended that Western gamers like me are considered slow when it comes to playing and competing games? I must sit with this.
Regardless, I believe that the game “Game of Thrones: Kingsroad” appears to offer a stronger gaming experience compared to many previous “Game of Thrones” games, but we’ll see for sure when it gets released.
