Game of Thrones alum Kristian Nairn reflects on friendship with Isaac Hempstead-Wright
As a fan who has delved deep into the captivating world of Game of Thrones, I found Kristian Nairn’s memoir, Beyond the Throne, to be an enthralling journey through his life and career. From his humble beginnings in Northern Ireland during the Troubles to his rise as Hodor on one of the most popular shows in history, Nairn’s story is a testament to resilience and determination.
Kristian Nairn is recognized primarily as the actor who portrayed Hodor in the renowned series “Game of Thrones,” a towering character known for having just one word in his vocabulary, which he used to carry Bran Stark around after the young boy became wheelchair-bound. Besides this iconic role, Nairn is also a globetrotting DJ and an actor on shows like “Our Flag Means Death.
Nairn acknowledges that his connection with Hodor is quite strong, but at times he tries to minimize it. As he recently shared with Us Weekly, “You’ll never catch me spinning a track that references Hodor.” He admits that perhaps he should have incorporated it, as it might have boosted his audience to hundreds of thousands. However, he feels that his musical spirit wouldn’t have allowed him to do so because he’s been a musician for a long time. The idea felt a bit overly sentimental to him.
I’ll play the Game of Thrones theme on my guitar, it’s using one of my other skills. It’s a way just to put that in there, and I really enjoy doing it, so I’ll do something like that with a little nod to it. Whereas on the Rave of Thrones proper tour, there would have been props and stuff, people dressed up, but now that’s probably not the vibe unless it’s a theme party.
In the mid-2010s, Nairn started the Rave of Thrones tour when Game of Thrones was at its peak in popularity. Despite his efforts to separate himself from the series, he acknowledges that he can’t completely escape it. This could be why he chose to delve deeper with his recent memoir titled Beyond the Throne: Epic Journeys, Lasting Friendships, and Unexpected Tales. The book contains a wealth of intriguing stories, such as Nairn’s upbringing in Northern Ireland during the conflict known as the Troubles, his struggles with addiction, and his journey toward accepting his sexuality. However, nearly every alternate chapter focuses on Game of Thrones, providing ample content for enthusiasts to explore.
Notably, Nairn has numerous anecdotes related to collaborating with Isaac Hempstead-Wright, who portrayed Bran Stark; this alignment is understandable given that Nairn featured in most of his scenes alongside the actor. At the time of the first season’s airing, Hempstead-Wright was 12 years old, while for the final season he turned 20. Essentially, Nairn had the opportunity to witness Hempstead-Wright grow up, and their bond grew stronger over time.
Nairn expressed his fondness for that young lad, ‘He feels like the brother I never had,’ he stated. ‘That sentiment remains unchanged, and I believe our bond will last till the end of our days.’ He added, ‘It’s an exceptional connection.’
