Gail Porter reveals how she rebuilt her life after losing ‘everything’ – and says she is ‘finally happy and in love’

Gail Porter shares her inspiring story following decades of hardship, including heartache, homelessness, and health issues, expressing that she is now completely content and fulfilled.

The well-known television personality, aged 54, faced the loss of her home, job, and self-assurance following a prolonged struggle with mental health challenges, hair loss (alopecia), and financial ruin.

Now, she says she’s found peace – and even fallen in love again.

In the ’90s, the host of Big Breakfast gained widespread recognition, transforming into a familiar figure in many homes. However, by 2011, her personal life took an unfortunate turn for the worse and became chaotic.

At the age of forty, Gail was admitted to a psychiatric facility under the Mental Health Act, and she found herself on a ward alongside aggressive patients and individuals experiencing severe emotional turmoil.

Reflecting to the mirror, she reminisced, ‘It was a truly frightening experience. I was heavily medicated, housed in a ward alongside men who believed themselves to be Jesus and aggressive individuals. It seemed as if I had stepped into the world of One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest.’

In just three years, she found herself without a permanent home, sleeping on park benches in Hampstead Heath, as her previous arrangements for couch-hopping didn’t provide the needed consistency.

Although she had applied for positions at charities and libraries, she continued to be denied and expressed her feelings by saying: “All I wanted was someone to offer me an opportunity.

When she was at her most vulnerable, caring individuals reached out to authorities who transported her to a hospital for assistance. This moment signified the start of a gradual yet resilient process towards recovery.

In the year 2005 marked the start of her decline in popularity when she was affected by alopecia, causing her to lose her hair. Despite refusing to wear wigs and insisting on staying true to herself, she struggled with dwindling job opportunities. Instead, invitations for appearances came only for her to discuss her condition, often without payment.

Gail also battled anorexia and depression, and eventually filed for bankruptcy in 2017.

She said: ‘I lost everything – my house, my career, my confidence.’

Ever since that point, she’s managed to reestablish her life by combining charitable endeavors, regular physical activity, and a revitalized drive for meaning.

She even picked up a BAFTA for her 2020 documentary Being Gail Porter.

Currently, her efforts are primarily directed towards assisting others through organizations such as the Samaritans and Prince William’s Homewards initiative, a project dedicated to addressing homelessness throughout the United Kingdom.

Although Gail has made it clear that she’s not interested in conventional dating, as she doesn’t date, finds it inconvenient, and her past marriage was sufficient for her, she has discovered a unique form of affection in an unanticipated spot: a wig.

After about two decades without it, she collaborated with Amber Jean Rowan’s ethically-minded wig company to develop ‘The Gail’ – a bespoke wig that mimics her natural hair, which she has grown fond of.

Instead, she emphasized that it’s not a matter of hiding or concealing – rather, it’s an outlet for self-expression. Now, with this newfound liberty, I can alter my appearance as often as I desire, enjoying the versatility of two distinct looks at once.

Gail, a solitary individual not reliant on dating apps, expressed contentment in her life, which revolves around cherished friendships, her beloved feline companion, and her adult daughter, Honey, who is now 22 years old.

And after years of turmoil, she says the future finally feels hopeful.

She shared, “I’ve hit my lowest point, from sleeping on park benches to performing on a cruise ship stage.” She emphasized, “This shows that we can all overcome adversity.
