Gabrielle Union is eviscerated by trolls after her dramatic decision to leave X
As a seasoned journalist with decades of experience under my belt, I’ve witnessed the ebb and flow of social media platforms like no other. From MySpace to Facebook, Twitter, and beyond, each platform has had its moment in the sun, and each has faced its fair share of controversies. Now, it seems that X is following suit, with a growing list of high-profile users choosing to depart from the platform.
Gabrielle Union has faced harsh criticism online from internet bullies since she chose to depart from X, following the election of Donald Trump.
On Friday, Kirsten Dunst, the actress known for her role in Bring It On, unexpectedly shared a long message titled “It’s Been Real!” with her followers. In this post, she expressed that she felt it was time to move on, using the phrase “enough is enough.
Union, 52, stated that due to the reappearance of unpredictable numbers, she was compelled to let her followers locate her on Instagram, Threads, TikTok, BlueSky, Spill, and Facebook instead.
She signed off by saying ‘Let’s keep spreading love and light to one another in the ways that truly matter.’
People swiftly criticized the actress upon her exit, since it appeared that many hadn’t recognized her, and her departure didn’t seem to impact them significantly.
‘Nobody cares Gabriella. Kick rocks girl,’ one wrote.
‘@itsgabrielleu I wasn’t aware you were using X, and I may not realize you’re no longer active.’
Another noted: ‘You guys [Democrats] are such bad losers. Get out already!’
Others were left annoyed by her decision to post about why she was leaving.
‘You aren’t an airline. No need to announce your departure,’ one said.
Another wrote: ‘No need to announce. Bye.’
Since her announcement, Union’s X account has remained active, leaving many even more confused.
‘Delete your account first,’ someone said.
‘Deleting your Twitter account would be a great first step…’ another wrote.
The Union’s decision wasn’t just made following Donald Trump becoming the 47th U.S. President, but also post the appointment of Elon Musk, who owns company X, as head of a freshly created agency within the Republican government.
Last week, it was disclosed that Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy have been tasked with streamlining the oversized U.S. bureaucratic system, totaling approximately $6.5 trillion, as they lead the formation of a new department called the ‘Department of Government Efficiency’ (DOGE).
Once it was evident that Elon might align with Trump during his second term, numerous celebrities chose to deactivate their Twitter accounts.
On Thursday, renowned thriller writer Stephen King revealed that he was departing from platform X due to it becoming excessively hostile and unpleasant, or in other words, “too toxic” for his comfort.
77-year-old Horror King, who’s well known for his terrifying tales, issued a farewell message through his account after speculation arose about Elon Musk, 53, allegedly prohibiting him from the social media site.
‘I’m leaving Twitter. Tried to stay, but the atmosphere has just become too toxic. Follow me on Threads, if you like,’ he wrote.
A day before, the author put an end to rumors that Elon Musk had removed him from X, following his lighthearted comment about the billionaire’s friendship with the then-president-elect Trump.
He wrote on Wednesday, “It appears a rumor is circulating that I referred to the man associated with Musk as Trump’s potential new first lady. However, I didn’t say that, simply because I hadn’t thought of it.
‘There’s also a rumor going around that Muskie kicked me off Twitter. Yet here I am,’ King added.
King was talking about the latest memes involving Musk that have been produced using AI, and these memes portray the tech magnate as if he were Donald Trump’s spouse.
According to the Daily Dot, the memes started after Musk was featured in a Trump family photo.
Following this, the momentum grew stronger as an untrue report circulated claiming that King had been barred from X due to his reference to Musk as ‘Musk’s First Lady,’ instead of the actual title.
Jamie Lee Curtis has also joined the mass exodus of Hollywood stars leaving the platform.
On Wednesday, the actress from Freaky Friday who is 65 years old shared the news on Instagram, another popular social media platform.
Instead of most people who simply stop posting on their accounts, Curtis seems to have fully disabled hers, not keeping it active.
Curtis shared her latest update through an Instagram post, showcasing what appeared to be a screenshot from her personal X account on her mobile device.
The message stated, ‘I’m sorry, but your account has been disabled.’ At the bottom, in smaller text, it said, ‘#Farewell’.
In a candid move, Curtis, who’s previously spoken about her battles with substance abuse (drug and alcohol), utilized the Serenity Prayer in her post’s caption.
In her words, she expressed a prayer for the ability to embrace what I can’t alter, courage to modify what I can, and discernment to recognize the boundary between the two, when surrendering X.
Instead of directly explaining why, the Halloween Star chose not to disclose her reasons for departing the contentious social media site. However, numerous users speculate that her decision might be connected to Elon Musk’s association with Trump and his recent election win.
51-year-old actress Alyssa Milano shared that she is stepping away, as demonstrated by a snapshot of her inactive Instagram account she posted on Thursday.
She wrote, ‘Farewell, X. Greetings, Clear Skies,’ as a nod to the leading social network, Bluesky, that has just taken the number one spot in the Apple app rankings for social media.
Since the U.S. presidential election, the rapidly growing service has seen a surge of over 700,000 new users, as reported by The Guardian on Monday.
Television journalist Don Lemon also parted ways with the platform.
As ardently devoted as a Union devotee, I shared the latest declaration he made on subject X. Yet, his intentions about potentially shutting down his account or ceasing to post new content while keeping his old posts accessible remained unclear to me.
He started off by saying, “It has been a joy interacting with everyone on X, but now it’s time for me to depart from this platform.” This was written, it seemed, on paper that resembled The Don Lemon Show’s stationery.
He said he no longer believed that X was a ‘place for honest debate and discussion, transparency, and free speech.’
Lemon explained that he made the choice due to the upcoming changes in X’s terms of service, effective from this coming Friday, 15th November.
The website stipulates that any legal disputes must be resolved either in the United States District Court for the Northern District of Texas or in local state courts within Tarrant County, Texas.
According to a report by The Washington Post, X has decided to alter their terms of service. This move “means that lawsuits against X will be heard in courts with a conservative bias, making it potentially easier for X to avoid legal challenges and penalize critics.” Lemon added his thoughts, stating, “I believe the implications are clear.
He concluded his post with a list of his other social media accounts for fans to find him at, adding, ‘I hope you will join me there.’
