Gabby Logan told not to come back by TV boss during “rough ride”
According to Gabby Logan, her previous supervisor at ITV advised her not to return to work following her demotion that occurred during the 2006 FIFA World Cup.
On the podcast “White Wine Question Time” hosted by Kate Thornton, Logan shared that she was initially chosen to host England’s group stage matches but was later substituted and ultimately instructed to return home entirely.
Logan shared: “Looking back, I had quite a challenging phase in my career around my early thirties. It’s hard to believe that was almost twenty years ago! Back then, I honestly felt like it might spell the end for my professional journey.
When I transitioned from ITV to the BBC, it was a second opportunity presented to me, as by that point in my mid-30s, I felt like I had already embarked on a lengthy career and accomplished numerous significant achievements. My professional journey began at Sky, followed by my tenure at ITV where I undertook many noteworthy projects.
However, it seemed like I might need to make a significant change due to a supervisor who didn’t appear to support me and was considering a minor demotion for me. He removed me from the 2006 World Cup team.
Logan explained, “While my children were just a year old, I embarked on a journey to Germany for the World Cup, leaving my infants behind. However, during the tournament, things didn’t go as planned, and I returned home feeling dejected, with my head hanging low.
He asked me not to return as I had planned to attend several playoff games but would be leaving for a few days since it was just Germany and my children were around a year old. During the transition from group stages to playoffs, there’s usually some downtime, which I intended to use by going home.
After the event, Logan mentioned that she departed from ITV towards the end of the year, opting for a role at the BBC instead. She considered this move as a fresh opportunity, or in her words, a “second chance”.
