G2 BrokenBlade: “We were always on the back foot. Today was a disaster.”

Following a disheartening 3-0 loss to FlyQuest, G2’s BrokenBlade shares insights into his challenges, errors committed, and the way ahead.

At MSI 2025, I found myself on the receiving end of a crushing 3-0 sweep by FlyQuest. The European crew and I just couldn’t keep up with FlyQuest’s game dominance across the entire series. It was Independence Day, and North America had a major reason to celebrate as they bested one of their longest-standing rivals in the League of Legends scene.

During a private conversation with Xpsp, G2’s BrokenBlade discussed the missteps in their strategy, the subpar results they faced during the competition, and the crucial aspects that must be reevaluated as they plan for future success.

Struggling to counter FlyQuest’s plays and the Yorick-Trundle duo

Esports.gg: In the first matches, G2 started very coordinated and synchronized. What did go wrong?

BrokenBlade (G2): I believe we failed to perform in today’s games, and there wasn’t much opportunity for us to compete. They simply outplayed us, leaving us with no chance to counterattack; we were always playing defense. Today was a dismal performance.

Was the situation primarily centered around the draft, or was it influenced more by feelings such as anxiety and irritation?

BrokenBlade: I don’t believe there was a misalignment in our team composition. We were performing well in the previous game. They chose Yorick together with Trundle, while we were aiming for Gwen and Vi, but they banned Gwen, which worked out well for them. As a result, I had to play Cho’Gath instead. I only had strategies prepared for Yorick, not Gwen or Jax who was also banned. It turned out to be quite challenging. I was doing well in the game, but I was ultimately destroyed by Trundle’s ultimate, which wasn’t ideal. It’s tough going up against an AP Kai’Sa and Trundle, so it was a difficult matchup.

Bwipo’s Garen was quite unexpected. How did you prepare for that choice?

BrokenBlade: I anticipated Garen’s arrival when I chose K’Sante, as I remember Bwipo often preferring that champion previously. Frankly, I feel his influence wasn’t significant in the game, but he’s always a frustrating opponent due to his abilities. He managed to clear waves and frequently darted into mid-lane with Stridebreaker. On one occasion, he took us by surprise.

“We have to accept that we were not better than FlyQuest.”

How different was this series from what you expected when studying FlyQuest before the match?

BrokenBlade: As anticipated, they were planning lane swaps, but I think our team handled it pretty well, except for the final game. We came prepared to win today, not expecting a 3-0 sweep, but sometimes things don’t go as planned. It seems we weren’t quite as strong as FlyQuest today. Now, it’s crucial that we put in all our effort to improve and get stronger.

This is a very hard loss for G2 in a while. How do you personally process a result like this?

BrokenBlade: I still did not have time to process this loss, so I can’t answer this question now.

With this loss, what do you think needs to change heading into future tournaments?

As a dedicated fan, I’d like to echo BrokenBlade’s sentiments: We need to figure out how to excel as a team in League of Legends (LoL). Currently, we seem to be wandering aimlessly in our gameplay. Progress has been tough this season, and our performance in LoL during MSI 2022 didn’t meet our expectations. But we’re not giving up! We’re heading back home now, where we can regroup, practice, and bring our A-game for the best League of Legends experience possible.

What did G2 BrokenBlade take away from MSI 2025

What is the one thing you take away from this MSI 2025 experience?

BrokenBlade’s Reflection: The key takeaway is that we’re progressing towards our desired goals, and this experience serves as a valuable lesson. If we don’t learn from it, we risk facing the same challenges again and potentially suffering a setback. I aim to absorb as much knowledge and gain as many insights as possible during this MSI event. Frankly, I’m not content with my performance at the start, as I believe it wasn’t up to par then. However, later on, I felt more satisfied, but such a situation can’t recur in an international tournament setting.

Hey there! After all the hard work we’ve put into our recent tournament, I’m wondering what’s next on your agenda. Are you planning a well-deserved break to recharge, or are we diving straight into the preparations for the Esports World Cup without skipping a beat?

BrokenBlade: The Esports World Cup is next, so we are going to be preparing for that.
