G2 Esports’ victory over FlyQuest at Worlds 2025 was historic – they ended North America’s losing streak and advanced to the quarterfinals.
As Isaac Cummings-Bentley pointed out during the broadcast, G2 hasn’t won a best-of series against a North American team in six years. This match against FlyQuest was a good opportunity for them to finally change that pattern of losing to NA teams.
G2 and FlyQuest last played each other at the Esports World Cup earlier this year, with G2 winning a single match. More recently, at the 2025 Mid-Season Invitational, FlyQuest decisively defeated G2 with a 3-0 victory in a best-of-five series.
As a G2 fan, it’s hard not to think back to how amazing they were in 2019, especially when they won MSI! It feels like ages ago, though, and honestly, even though they often dominate in Europe, they just haven’t been able to consistently perform at that same level on the international stage lately. It’s frustrating to watch, because we know they can be that good!
G2 Esports vs FlyQuest in Worlds 2025 Swiss
Both teams have a record of two wins and one loss in their group, ensuring a team from the West will finish in the top eight. G2 qualified as the number one seed from the LEC, and FLY is representing the LTA as their highest-performing team.
G2 has historically struggled against FlyQuest, having lost all three of their matches against them. Despite this, G2 generally performs well against North American teams overall, with a record of 15 wins and 13 losses.
Game 1 – Craps appears
The game started slowly, with the first kill happening almost 12 minutes in by Rasmus “Caps” Winther. However, once he secured that first kill, the game really picked up. Unfortunately for Caps, he died three times in a row, giving FlyQuest a significant advantage. They ultimately used that advantage to earn the full Feats of Strength bonus.
FLY kept up the pressure throughout the middle of the game, capitalizing on any mistakes G2 made when players moved out of position. Team fights remained consistent, and the top-ranked team, LTA, continued to gain advantages.
Caps was focused as a target and couldn’t secure a second kill. As Sam Hartman-Kenzler put it, the entire strategy was about eliminating him. FlyQuest dominated G2 in the first game, and G2 struggled for over 20 minutes without being able to effectively counter.
Game 2 – Soracan’t
Alan “Busio” Cwalina chose Soraka hoping to shut down the opposing team’s strong pairing. While this strategy worked fairly well, Rudy “SkewMond” Semaan played aggressively and controlled much of the game. After a rough start in the first game, SkewMond stepped up and led G2 Esports to victory in the mid-game.
Despite facing challenges, the North American team persevered and secured victory for Atakhan through sheer willpower. Meanwhile, G2, even while in the lead, didn’t seem to have the same drive or initiative.
FlyQuest’s Busio kept his team alive in team fights for longer than expected, but G2 still won and extended the series to a deciding game three.
Game 3 – Craps out, Claps in
An unusual champion choice this game was SkewMond playing Dr. Mundo. Early on, both teams played cautiously, leading to back-and-forth kills and constant fighting throughout the map.
G2 took the first real advantage in the game by successfully targeting lone members of FLY and winning team fights. This allowed them to secure objectives like the Rift Herald and gain control of the map.
From here, it was a landslide for G2.
It felt like G2 was winning every teamfight, but FlyQuest actually managed to sneak in and grab Baron! Then, that amazing Shockwave ultimate from Caps just caught everyone out, and G2 officially became the first European team to make it to top 8 since Rogue back in 2022. It was such a relief to see them finally break their losing streak against FlyQuest and North America – it had been way too long!
Hanwha Life Esports has secured a spot in the top 8, while FlyQuest now faces a crucial match to stay in contention in the Swiss Stage of Worlds 2025.
