FX’s New Show Turns Mundane Laundry Day into Epic Event for Gen Z’s Coming-of-Age!
FX’s fresh comedy titled “Adults” is now part of the series lineup focusing on young adults navigating life, and it’s already holding its own alongside timeless favorites such as “Girls” and “Search Party“. However, unlike previous shows, this one delves into unique topics resonating with the current generation, given that Gen Z is experiencing unprecedented times. The creative minds behind it, Ben Kronengold and Rebecca Shaw, have perfected a humorous perspective, which they developed during their stint on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.
The TV show titled “Adults” revolves around five friends sharing a home in Queens, New York, during those fleeting years post-college. Among them are Samir (Malik Elassal), Anton (Owen Thiele), Billie (Lucy Freyer), Issa (Amita Rao), and her Canadian boyfriend Paul Baker (Jack Innanen). To create excitement for the upcoming series, FX organized an event at The Laundry Room in Culver City. This ordinary laundromat was transformed into a lively nightclub before its debut.
In the midst of the spinning disco balls, creatively sculpted balloon animals, and the rhythmic tunes of an indie music concert, ScreenRant conversed with FX’s VP of Multi-Platform Marketing, Kenya Hardaway, discussing the intricate details behind the Adults activation. Hardaway further shared her thoughts on the show’s central themes, clarified why it stands apart from previous coming-of-age comedies, and offered a tantalizing sneak peek into the upcoming Alien: Earth activation at SDCC.

How Suds And Sounds Came Together To Celebrate FX’s Adults
“Take Something As Mundane As Doing Laundry And Turn It Into An Epic Event”
ScreenRant: What’s the initial process when assembling something like this, and approximately how much time is required for its completion?
Kenya Hardaway: I believe the initial action involves pinpointing our target audience, their location, their preferred communication style, and what excites them to participate. Essentially, we aim to figure out how to introduce ourselves effectively so that it resonates with them positively.
Regarding timing, it’s flexible but I estimate it could take around three months in total. The initial phase included brainstorming ideas and planning, which took some time due to the importance of getting the concept perfect. This involved numerous discussions to ensure everyone was on the same page about the show, as well as careful consideration of what we wanted to highlight. In reality, it was approximately eight weeks where we were fully dedicated to the project, working diligently to bring it to life.
ScreenRant asked about a specific aspect in their activation that they were keen to include when focusing on adults.
As a passionate cinephile, I found myself pondering over a project that would be thrilling and engaging. The question on my mind was: “What embodies the essence of youthful adulthood? What are the defining factors that resonate with almost every young adult journey?
We arrived at specific locations, and among them, a standout laundromat emerged. If we could transform even the most ordinary task like doing laundry into a grand spectacle, that would make an excellent opening for our program. That’s how Suds and Sounds came into being.
Adults Is A New Kind Of Coming-Of-Age Show
“There’s Comedy To It And An Element Of Truth That’s Been Missing”
ScreenRant: Did you watch any episodes to help you put it together? What was your reaction?
As a passionate cinephile, I can confidently say that this production offers an outstanding portrayal of everyday life, particularly focusing on the experiences of young adults in their twenties. The narrative revolves around friendships, making it incredibly relatable for many viewers like myself. It’s not just engaging; it’s downright hilarious! I can hardly wait for its release.
ScreenRant: If you could compare the show to any past comedies, which one would you choose?
Kenya Hardaway expresses that he wouldn’t make comparisons, instead highlighting his enthusiasm for the uniqueness of Adults, which stands apart from previous works.
It seems that numerous iterations of shows focusing on early adulthood have been produced over the years, as this subject has held significant interest. However, what sets this particular show apart is a unique touch – it combines humor with an authenticity that has thus far been absent, and I can’t wait for everyone to experience it!
Expect To See Even More FX At SDCC 2025
“We Built Upon What You Saw At SXSW”
ScreenRant: Do you have any other cool activations in the pipeline?
Kenya Hardaway: Starting this August, we’ll unveil Alien: Earth! We have a plethora of enjoyable activities lined up over the summer. You can expect our presence at Comic-Con to be quite significant. We’re always eagerly planning the next big thing, and these events offer us chances to experiment and learn more. They’re thrilling ways to connect with our audience and hopefully encourage repeat visits.
If you attended the Alien: Earth activation at SXSW, remember it’s set to be even more grand at Comic-Con. We’ve expanded on what was shown at SXSW, and there are some fresh aspects of the Maginot ship that will be unveiled, so consider revisiting!
