FX’s New Ryan Murphy Show Centered On Tragic Kennedy Couple Debuts With Stellar Rotten Tomatoes Score

FX and Hulu are launching a new series from Ryan Murphy titled Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette, and early reviews on Rotten Tomatoes are very positive.

The new series Love Story begins streaming February 12th at 9 p.m. EST with its first three episodes, and will tell the heartbreaking story of John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette’s relationship. Creator Ryan Murphy received criticism, especially from JFK Jr.’s nephew Jack Schlossberg, for not involving the Kennedy family in the show’s development.

Even though some people have criticized it, Love Story has started off strong on Rotten Tomatoes with an 80% approval rating. This score may change as more reviews come in, but it’s a promising beginning for Murphy’s latest series.

Reviewers have described Love Story as a new and interesting take on a familiar true story, also complimenting the creative decisions made by its filmmakers.

Originally announced in 2021 as part of Ryan Murphy’s American Story franchise – which includes American Horror Story, American Crime Story, and American Sports Story – the series Love Story was later simply titled Love Story to broaden its appeal to viewers worldwide. However, the core idea of the show remained unchanged.

As a lifelong movie fan, I’ve always been fascinated by the Kennedys – they’re a family everyone seems to have an opinion about. I’m really intrigued by this new film, Love Story, because it looks like it’s going to explore a very public romance that sadly ended in tragedy, giving us a behind-the-scenes look at what really happened.

Paul Kelly will portray John F. Kennedy Jr. in an upcoming project. Sarah Pidgeon will play Carolyn Bessette Kennedy, with Naomi Watts as Jackie Kennedy and Grace Gummer as Caroline Kennedy. The cast also includes Leila George, Noah Fearnley, Sydney Lemmon, Alessandro Nivola, Omari K. Chancellor, Constance Zimmer, Dree Hemingway, Erich Bergen, and Michael Nathanson.

The series Love Story is an anthology, meaning each season will tell a new romance featuring a different well-known couple. It was created by Connor Hines, who also works as an executive producer alongside Murphy, Nina Jacobson, Brad Simpson, Eric Kovtun, Nissa Diederich, Scott Robertson, Monica Levinson, Kim Rosenstock, D.V. DeVincentis, and Tanase Popa.

Ryan Murphy has two TV shows coming out in 2026. The first, The Beauty, is currently airing on FX and has received a 70% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. This is a significant improvement over some of his 2025 releases, including Monster: The Ed Gein Story, which received a 21% rating, and All’s Fair, with only 6%.

Viewers weren’t impressed with 9-1-1: Nashville, giving it a score of just 33%. Mid-Century Modern had a different fate – despite good reviews from both critics (88%) and audiences (80%), it was canceled after its first season.

Recent TV shows from Murphy have been inconsistent, with some receiving poor reviews. However, the success of The Beauty and Love Story demonstrates that he’s still capable of creating excellent television.

The documentary, Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette, will debut on FX and Hulu this Thursday, February 12th, at 9 p.m. Eastern time.
