Furiosa Bombs: Mad Max Prequel Loses $120M for Warner Bros

The recently disclosed findings indicate that the production of “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga,” a prequel to the critically acclaimed film “Mad Max: Fury Road,” resulted in a financial setback of approximately $120 million for Warner Bros. This movie delves into the tale of Furiosa, tracing her journey from a captive child to a formidable adult prepared to challenge powerful forces. Instead of Charlize Theron, the main roles were played by Anya Taylor-Joy and Alyla Browne, with Chris Hemsworth, Tom Burke, Lachy Hulme, and George Shevtsov in supporting parts.

According to a recent report from Deadline, it appears that the financial burden of producing Furiosa has fallen heavily on Warner Bros., with estimated losses amounting to approximately $120 million. This calculation takes into account both the film’s box office earnings and its production costs. Beyond its box office earnings, Furiosa is said to have generated around $50 million from home entertainment sales and an additional $85 million through television and streaming platforms. Regrettably, these revenues were not enough to cover the movie’s production expenses, which totaled approximately $330.6 million when considering production costs, advertising, prints, and distribution fees. Consequently, Furiosa has incurred a significant loss of around $119.6 million for Warner Bros.

What This Means For Furiosa

The Film Vastly Underperformed Fury Road

With the remarkable performance of its previous installment featuring Tom Hardy, director George Miller and Warner Bros. were anticipating another box-office hit with Furiosa. Regrettably, it didn’t quite match up to Fury Road in various aspects. Critical reception for Furiosa was less favorable than its predecessor, earning a 90% compared to Fury Road‘s impressive 97%. Additionally, unlike Mad Max: Fury Road, which won 6 Oscars and was also nominated for Best Picture, Furiosa failed to secure any Oscar nominations.

The latest findings indicate that the movie “Furiosa” fell significantly short in box office earnings compared to its predecessor in the franchise. Although the precise figures are yet to be disclosed, it’s been understood for some time now that Warner Bros. likely suffered substantial losses with “Furiosa.” Initially budgeted at around $168 million (as confirmed by Deadline in the new report), the film managed to generate only $174 million globally, a sum far from sufficient to cover its total production cost of $330.6 million, even taking into account streaming income.

Our Take On The Furiosa Losses

Warner Bros. Miscalculated

It appears that Warner Bros. experienced a costly misstep in producing “Furiosa,” as they had likely expected another blockbuster success similar to “Fury Road” which grossed $380.4 million on a budget of approximately $150 million. However, the performance of “Furiosa” indicates that the success of “Fury Road” might have been due to its quality or the anticipation surrounding the franchise revival, a magic they were unable to recapture with “Furiosa.
