FURIA sidde reflects on their BetBoom Dacha run: “We aimed for top 4, but I’m proud of how we turned things around after a bad start.”

As a seasoned gamer with years of experience under my belt, I can confidently say that FURIA’s performance at BetBoom Dacha was a rollercoaster ride – a mix of highs and lows that mirrors the unpredictable nature of our favorite games.

The FURIA head coach saw some improvements at BetBoom Dacha.

FURIA has been eliminated from the BetBoom Dacha playoffs after suffering a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Eternal Fire. However, their head coach, Sid “sidde” Marcedo, found several encouraging aspects during the competition.

In the tournament, the Brazilian team ended up placing between 5th and 6th. Although they suffered a lopsided defeat against Team Spirit and were eliminated by Eternal Fire in the playoffs, they managed to win against 9 Pandas, Aurora, Eternal Fire during the play-in stage, as well as Virtus.pro in the playoffs.

In 2024, FURIA showed their finest Counter-Strike play of the year at BetBoom Dacha. After their elimination, Xpsp interviewed sidde to discuss their overall campaign, Gabriel “FalleN” Toledo’s performance, and his nearly two months as the team’s coach.

What’s your opinion on both FURIA’s performance and results here at this tournament?

Initially, our game in the tournament against Team 9 Pandas wasn’t up to our usual standard, but I’m glad we’ve moved past that and have made improvements since. I encouraged the team to inject more energy into our matches and stick to our own playing style for the remainder of the tournament, and it seems like our performance in the play-in reflects that change.

In our group, we clinched the top spot, qualified for the playoffs, and had an impressive first match against Virtus.pro. However, we encountered Spirit in the next round, a team that’s proving to be extremely challenging these days. If you don’t bring your best performance, they can easily overpower you, as we unfortunately experienced.

Today’s match against Eternal Fire didn’t set any records, but when considering the entire campaign and our ability to recover, I’d say it was fairly in line with what we anticipated performance-wise, yet fell short in terms of outcomes. However, I’m pleased to see that the team improved as the tournament progressed, revealing our genuine potential.

All things considered, can you say FURIA accomplished their mission here?

“While we didn’t quite reach our target of finishing in the top 4, I’m extremely proud of how we managed to recover from a rocky start. Although the outcomes didn’t align with our objectives, our performance was relatively close to what we had anticipated. Let’s take all the lessons learned here and apply them to future competitions.”

After his debut against 9 Pandas, FalleN played in a significantly different style that we hadn’t observed in some time. It seemed like he opted for a much looser and aggressive approach on his own, or perhaps this was a collective team decision. Regardless, today he demonstrated the best map performance of his career against Eternal Fire, as evidenced by his play.

In the initial game, there was a mix of timidity and rigidity displayed by the team, which FalleN recognized in his personal play as well. He believed he could exert greater influence, and after this realization, the players became noticeably more cohesive during serves.

“Additionally, it was significant that the captain of Team Pandas seemed to underestimate us, which may have contributed to our efforts towards becoming more unified, energetic, and cohesive. I believe this affected FalleN’s personal gameplay as he absorbed our enthusiasm, playing with increased bravery, taking bolder risks, and embodying the fearless yet thoughtful player we’ve admired for years. This was his approach for the remainder of the tournament.”

How has your tenure as the head coach been treating you thus far, given that FURIA is a team with many influential voices and you are relatively young? Since you’ve had some prior experience with them, do you find that they take your suggestions and critiques into account?

It’s been terrific collaborating with them. Just as you mentioned, despite numerous assertive voices within the team, I believe my tenure as an assistant coach played a significant role in shaping our bond. This experience allowed them to grasp my perspectives, working style, and the way I engage on a more personal level.

During the past 1.5 years while serving as an assistant coach, everyone is well aware of our organizational structure. Nicholas “Guerri” Nogueira [former head coach of FURIA], who was always vocal and led the team, established a solid foundation for me. Since the players understand that the more powerful voice belongs to the coaching staff, I find it effortless to express my thoughts or introduce fresh ideas for the team. The players listen attentively to my suggestions, we have a positive rapport, and it’s been an enjoyable experience overall.
