Full moon cycle: Peter Gabriel releases new single (but how good is it?)

Pete Gabriel truly embodies the idea of being an artist. After leaving Genesis, he continued to create music as a solo performer, consistently taking chances and producing exceptional work. He’s more focused on artistic integrity than commercial success, prioritizing quality over popularity.

In 2023, Gabriel released his album i/o in a unique way – one song at a time, coinciding with each full moon. He’s now using the same approach for his new project, o|i, and has already released four tracks from it.

Their newest track, “Till Your Mind is Shining,” came out this week. Like previous releases from the i/o project, these o|i songs will be available in two versions: a darker mix and a brighter mix. This first release is the darker version of the song.

Peter Gabriel releases his fourth track from new album o|i but how good is it?

Gabriel recently said his new song is the most pop-oriented he’ll get on this album. Before his time with the progressive rock band Genesis, he wrote songs with more R&B and radio-friendly elements. While “Till Your Mind is Shining” is easy to listen to, it’s not quite pop music, and Gabriel may not be suited to – or even want to – create that kind of sound.

Okay, so the song starts with a vocal style that totally reminded me of Alanis Morissette’s “You Learn,” but then the music shifted and I thought, “Oh no, is this going to sound like Peter Gabriel’s “Digging in the Dirt” again?” Luckily, it didn’t get that angry, and that Alanis vibe actually came back around for a bit.

The song isn’t unpleasant, but it gets repetitive and feels overly long at five minutes – it could easily be trimmed down. The unusual instrumental section around the middle doesn’t really save it either.

Gabriel’s songs, particularly with a memorable line like “ill-u-min-a-tion,” are undeniably catchy. However, they often feel emotionally incomplete, leaving you wanting more depth. This has long been a pattern with Peter Gabriel – technically brilliant with music and arrangements, but sometimes lacking genuine emotional resonance. Interestingly, “Till Your Mind is Shining” manages to break that mold and actually connect on a deeper level.

The other songs from o|i are all solid, and this new one is pretty good too. It’s just a bit annoying that fans will have to wait another month to hear the fifth song.
