The new movie Zootopia 2 is a huge success for Disney, quickly becoming one of their highest-grossing films ever. Released on November 26th, the sequel to the popular 2016 film Zootopia has already earned over a billion dollars worldwide. Jared Bush and Byron Howard directed the film, which features the voices of Ginnifer Goodwin, Jason Bateman, and Ke Huy Quan.
Okay, so as a huge animation fan, I’m completely blown away! Zootopia 2 has officially smashed box office records! It’s made a whopping $1.46 billion worldwide, which means it’s actually passed Frozen II and become the highest-grossing animated Disney film ever. Can you believe it? And get this – as of today, it’s the second biggest movie globally for the year, only behind Ne Zha 2. Seriously impressive!
Zootopia 2 is receiving excellent reviews from both viewers and critics, currently holding a 90% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It’s up for two awards at the 2026 Golden Globes – Best Animated Feature and a special award recognizing cinematic and commercial success – and is competing against KPop Demon Hunters in both categories. Both films are expected to be nominated for the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.
Despite ongoing challenges for movie theaters, Zootopia 2 has become a rare success, earning over $1 billion worldwide. It’s the second Disney film this year to reach that milestone, following the live-action Lilo & Stitch remake released in May, which made $1.038 billion globally. Both films benefited from being based on well-known and beloved stories.
Despite recent successes, Disney’s biggest movie of all time is still Avengers: Endgame. The next two top spots are also held by Disney-owned franchises: Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Avengers: Infinity War. The animated film Inside Out, from Pixar, comes in at number four, making Zootopia the highest-grossing movie created entirely by Disney itself.
Coming in at number 5 is Disney’s 2019 live-action version of The Lion King. But the Frozen movies might change things up! There’s a possibility a future Frozen sequel could take the place of a potential Zootopia 2. Disney has already confirmed that Frozen 3 and Frozen 4 are being made, and they’ll be released close together as one large, connected story.
Both Zootopia and Frozen were big hits before the pandemic, and represent some of Disney’s more recent original successes. With Zootopia 2 now released, it’s clear the competition for audience attention is ongoing, as fans eagerly return to see beloved characters – though Elsa and Anna from Frozen remain incredibly popular.
