Over the last twenty years, Mario’s presence in the public eye has diminished somewhat due to a series of events such as canceled albums, conflicts with management, and troubles with record labels.

Difficult upbringing

Mario hails from Baltimore, Maryland, where he was born in August 1986. His upbringing was largely overseen by his grandmother due to the fact that his mother, Shawntia Hardaway, battled with a heroin addiction during his formative years.

At the tender age of four, he displayed an early affection for music, which led his mother to acquire a karaoke machine to foster his interest and nurture his budding talent.

Following his ability to play the piano and subsequently joining a school’s music group, it wasn’t until he was eleven that he was spotted. This happened after he played “I’ll Make Love to You” at a nearby talent competition.

Troy Patterson spotted his talent and later brought Mario under his wing, eventually welcoming him into his family home in New Jersey.

In 2020, Mario expressed thanks for Troy’s kindness in welcoming him at the time he did, saving him from entering the foster care system and potential trouble.

He mentioned that he felt fortunate when Troy stepped in to take him under his wing, offering him a new lease on life and a fresh direction.

Mario’s connection with his mom had its ups and downs, mainly due to her struggle with a heroin addiction during his formative years.

In the year 2007, they featured prominently in a MTV reality television spectacle titled “I Won’t Love You To Death: The Tale of Mario and His Mother.” During this program, Mario orchestrated an intervention aimed at securing assistance for his mom.

The documentary traced the journey of the celebrity as he reached out to his loved ones for assistance, and it depicted him composing a heartfelt plea to his mother, asking her to quit her addiction.

Growing up without my dad was tough, but it was significantly more challenging when my mom battled drug abuse and addiction.

It has always puzzled me as to why you’d devote such lengthy periods in the bathroom, disappear from home for extended stretches, and nap in the afternoon. Your behavior was completely perplexing to me.

The letter concluded with the line: ‘I love you so much – But I won’t love you to death.’

Later on, I shared that my decision to take part in the show was driven by a deep desire to assist fellow young souls grappling with addiction issues, much like myself.

Mario expressed that there had been debates regarding the level of personal exposure and authenticity, and since he wasn’t well-versed in the world of reality television at the time, his thoughts were simply, “If it’s real, it’s real,” and “Let’s just be honest and straightforward.

‘We chose to proceed with it, but there was an attempt to extend it into a longer series of events. However, I was content with just doing it once, and I aimed to use this opportunity to assist my fans and motivate people globally who are battling addiction. My intention was to demonstrate to young adults that they can conquer their challenges.’

Additionally, he penned a song titled “Do Right,” which is a tribute to Shawntia, exploring her struggle with addiction and its impact on his upbringth.

By 2013, their relationship had grown significantly stronger. Mario shared with Essence: ‘I’ve forgiven her. I can’t deny that there are moments when I reflect on our past and all we’ve been through, the neglect and the instances where she wasn’t present. But those who understand growth know that one must focus on the future.’

2017 saw him share the devastating update about Shawntia’s passing on Instagram, accompanied by a poignant and emotional tribute.

In a heartfelt tribute, accompanied by a cherished image of my beloved mother, I penned these words: “Our spirits walk hand in hand for all eternity, dearest Shawntia Hardaway. My love for you transcends time and space.

In 2008, Mario established the Do Right Foundation with a mission to enlighten and motivate kids who have experienced the impact of substance abuse.

Music breakthrough and early success 

At 14 years old, Mario received an opportunity for a contract with J Records, which was brokered by renowned producer Clive Davis, known for launching the career of Whitney Houston into stardom.

Later on, he pondered over the moment of sealing his initial contract, saying: “Things progressed rather swiftly for me. At 13, I was adopted and shifted from Baltimore to New Jersey.

Over the past two years, time seemed to fly by. Those years served as a valuable preparation period for me, acclimating me to the swift tempo of this particular industry.

In 2002, I unveiled my debut album, aptly named “Mario.” This record, with its catchy tunes, earned me a Gold certification, catapulting me into the limelight as a globally recognized teen idol, all at the tender age of 15.

The LP included three hits – Braid My Hair, C’Mon, and Just a Friend (2002) – with Just a Friend reaching number four on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

Looking back on his extraordinary rise to stardom during an interview with Billboard in 2022, Mario confessed that he hadn’t fully grasped the extent of his achievement when it happened.

At that time, I didn’t appreciate any of it. I was unaware of the significance of spending two decades in the industry. I never contemplated leaving a lasting impact or achieving top-ranking records.

Initially, I was utterly astonished at the swift transition from residing in Baltimore to becoming a globetrotting celebrity. It was during the recording of my second album that I embarked on my first major tour with Destiny’s Child.

I was listening to The Writing’s on the Wall while commuting to middle school by bus. Seeing the actual artists felt incredibly surreal and exciting, as if I were living in a real-life dream.

Looking back, I feel a sense of pride as I see the man I am evolving into, for I’ve traveled quite a distance. Now, I have the confidence to express this sentiment.

In my twenties, there were times I struggled with mental health issues and unresolved matters that I hadn’t fully addressed. However, looking back, I feel nothing but pride for you. So, my friend, I want to tell you: “Kudos to you!

In the year 2004, Mario followed up with his second studio album titled “Turning Point”, which achieved platinum status and surpassed the success of his initial release.

Not only did it yield its largest and longest-lasting success, but the track “Let Me Love You” – initially penned by an unestablished artist named Ne-Yo at the time – also became its most significant hit.

In 2006, the tune climbed to the top of charts in countries such as the United States, Canada, Germany, the Netherlands, and New Zealand, landing Mario a Grammy nomination for Outstanding Male R&B Vocal Performance.

Last year, during the 20th anniversary celebration of his song, Ne-Yo confessed that initially, he had doubts about whether teenage artist Mario could pull off the track due to his young age.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, he shared, “When I originally penned the song, I hadn’t anticipated that Mario would manage such a stellar performance.

Keep in mind, I hadn’t personally interacted with him before. The only information I had was that he had recently turned sixteen. Upon hearing the maturity of the song, I couldn’t help but wonder, “Isn’t this a bit beyond his experience? Does he really understand love at such a young age?

However, the Grammy-winner changed his mind after hearing Mario in the recording studio.

Over the past weekend, Ne-Yo made a surprising move during his performance by inviting Mario onstage for their very first joint rendition of “Let Me Love You”.

Acting career

Beyond just my gift for singing, I’ve also discovered a knack for acting, embracing various characters throughout my career.

As I reflect on my journey, one of my notable roles was dancing alongside Channing Tatum as Miles Darby in the 2006 dance-centric film “Step Up.” Over time, this movie morphed into a beloved franchise that continues to captivate audiences today.

Reflecting on my conversation with Nylon, I can’t help but reminisce about my initial role in Step Up. That was the first film I ever did, and the unforgettable encounter with Ann Fletcher at the Los Angeles casting left a lasting impression. She was like an energetic inferno, and our connection sparked instantly.

We conversed about music and the performing arts, and since the film’s inspiration was a Baltimore-based performing arts school, there was much debate surrounding it. I believe that particular scene was tailored specifically for me, and it surprisingly fit perfectly.

Additionally, I took pleasure in being both a musician on set and an actor, portraying Miles instead of Mario, a role inspired by Quincy Jones.

In the year 2007, he performed alongside the Academy Award-winning actress Hilary Swank in Freedom Writers. His role was portraying one of her vulnerable students at risk.

In addition to that, Mario portrayed Benny in a 2019 live TV adaptation of the popular musical Rent. The next year, he moved on to the highly praised series Empire, featuring as a rising R&B artist named Devon for its fifth and sixth seasons.

In the previous year, he played parts in the holiday movie “Style Me for Christmas” and the drama series “All the Queen’s Men.

Reality TV stints

Apart from his music and acting careers, Mario participated in the sixth season of Dancing with the Stars back in 2008 as well.

Renaissance 

Since his appearance on The Masked Singer, Mario’s career has experienced a revival, leading him to release his long-awaited debut album in six years titled “Glad You Came.

This is his sixth album released under a studio setting, following Mario (2002), Turning Point (2004), Go (2007), D.N.A. (2009), and Dancing Shadows (2018).

As a lifestyle enthusiast, I’d like to share an insightful tidbit about my creative process behind the latest album. In an exclusive interview with Entertainment Weekly, I revealed that the title of this masterpiece is a reflection of where I am personally at this point in my life. Interestingly enough, the popular show “The Masked Singer” has played a significant role in shaping this concept.

As a lifestyle expert, I find myself utterly astonished, finding myself simultaneously releasing an album and participating in “The Masked Singer.” This moment feels strikingly similar to the title of a place that I currently inhabit – Glad You Came.

It seems as though people think they’re watching someone else perform on The Masked Singer, unaware that it’s really me.

It seems to me that listeners are experiencing my latest album, which embodies a fresh chapter and a refined representation of myself as an artist, yet retains a familiar emotional resonance similar to my early works. However, this new release showcases enhanced lyrics and production quality.

It seems as though “Glad You Came” serves as a fitting title for where I am currently at in life, during this extraordinary phase. Remarkably, as an artist, my aspiration is for all aspects of my journey to eventually intertwine, making it a beautiful completion.

In December, he announced the release of his album, explaining that it was influenced by musical icons such as Marvin Gaye and Michael Jackson, and describing it as a fresh introduction to him as an artist.

Big things coming 

At present, Mario is traveling across various U.S. states as part of Ne-Yo’s “For My Fans Tour,” serving as the opening act for Mary J. Blige. This tour will conclude on April 14th in Boston, Massachusetts.

After unveiling his latest album, Mario will set out on a personal tour through Europe starting from April 24 in Dublin, moving on to locations like Leeds, London, Birmingham, Manchester, Paris, Antwerp, Tilburg, and Copenhagen. His tour concludes in Stockholm on May 17.

He additionally hinted at forthcoming thrilling projects on the horizon, sharing with WBLS in January that he feels his current stage is his peak, as although you may not have witnessed all of his work-in-progress, he’s unveiling it gradually – both from the film and music aspects.

‘Now, I have so much more to say and I actually have experienced it.’

Mario hinted at a future collaboration with Chris Brown, whom he worked with on the 2021 song “Get Back” and is expected to team up again for the release of “Won’t Keep You Waiting” in 2023.

He expressed his desire for collaborating more on music projects with Chris Brown. They need to coordinate their schedules, as they have some exciting plans in the works. Meanwhile, Chris is also working on some fantastic new material.

Apart from expressing his eagerness to collaborate with renowned artists such as Busta Rhymes, A$AP Rocky, Usher, and Beyoncé, he also acknowledged this desire.

Speaking of my wishlist, he mentioned, “Beyoncé remains at the top for me even today. Plus, I believe that a collaboration with Usher could create something truly enchanting within the realm of R&B.
