From Rugby Star to Pub Landlord: Gavin Henson’s Surprising New Life!
Twenty years ago he was racking up the caps for Wales during his rugby playing days.
In a similar vein, Gavin Henson gained as much recognition through his scandalous social lifestyle and high-profile romance with Charlotte Church as he did from his athletic abilities. However, twenty years later, Gavin Henson is now leading an entirely distinct life.
As a fervent admirer, let me share that the 43-year-old fly-half, once a beacon on the field, has now found tranquility as a contented husband and proprietor of a charming rural pub, “The Fox,” nestled in the Vale of Glamorgan.
The athlete found himself unwillingly taking on the role of a landlord, hesitant due to the significant change in his career path which led him away from the playing field.
In 2020, he confided in TopMob that under the circumstances of The Fox no longer being around, he succumbed to the influence of his peers and accepted the position, stating that it aligned perfectly with him wrapping up rugby – as I wouldn’t have had that free time otherwise.
Despite harboring some doubts initially, Gavin has since immersed himself wholeheartedly in his new profession. He’s been actively sharing on social media about the £22 per head seasonal menus he offers, as well as any current job opportunities he has.
The manager of the local pub has garnered accolades due to his successful hiring initiative. He’s attracting talented individuals by proposing competitive wages: a head chef position with a salary of £45,000, and bar staff roles with a wage of £30,000.

Gavin operates the pub alongside his spouse, Katie Wilson Mould, whom he wed in a picturesque ceremony in Gloucestershire in 2019, following three years of partnership.
In December of 2020, Gavin and Katie, the daughter of the late real estate mogul Raymond Mould, became parents to a newborn son. At the same time, Gavin continues to play an active role as father to his teenage children, Ruby, aged 18, and Dexter, who is 16 years old. He shares custody of these kids with his former partner Charlotte.
In the mid-2000s, a well-known athlete was known for being in a high-profile relationship with a Welsh opera singer. This couple stayed together from 2005 until their separation in 2010. Their extravagant nights out and expensive lifestyle earned them the nickname “the posh and chic couple of rugby” during that era.
However, six weeks following Gavin’s romantic gesture of proposing with a heart-shaped diamond, their relationship took a turn for the worse.
At one point, Charlotte expressed that the couple faced challenges due to their significantly diverse lifestyles, pondering: ‘Our issue stemmed from the fact that we were so unlike in every aspect. Initially, this was fascinating because we continuously learned from each other. However, eventually, our differences became too significant.’
‘We had entirely different opinions on everything, making his lifestyle unfamiliar to me. Despite my extensive training, he was very particular about what he ate and when he slept. Similarly, I suppose our lives were foreign to each other. It wasn’t a matter of disagreements; one day we simply asked ourselves, “Why are we continuing like this?”‘
Although often seen as a party-goer, Gavin himself confesses that he’s had difficulties with socializing, attributing it to his autism.
In a recent episode of The Big Jim Show, hosted by Jim Hamilton, Gavin expressed his viewpoint about people he calls friends: “They’re constantly seeking something from me.
In essence, it seems that the relationship I have with some former rugby players isn’t quite like a friendship as you might think. I could be described as being less supportive or attentive in these relationships.
The bonds I share with certain ex-rugby players aren’t the typical, close-knit friendships you might imagine. I may not always be the best friend to them.

Being on the autism spectrum is part of who I am, and sometimes my behaviors might seem unusual. This isn’t a reflection on me as a person, but rather a characteristic of my condition.
I didn’t make a new friend recently; it’s just that I find it hard to socialize in the traditional sense. However, when I’ve had a drink, I feel more at ease.
As a committed explorer of my own identity, I’ve found myself on a personal odyssey without yet receiving an official medical label. However, I’ve engaged in insightful conversations with individuals who believe that my experiences might align with those of someone on the autism spectrum.
He added: ‘For coaches and players throughout the years, it probably makes sense to them.
‘I think people found it hard to understand me. I’m a little bit different, obviously.

As a loyal member, I discovered the art of shaping myself to blend with the crowd, feigning acceptance to ensure my inclusion during weekends.
Whilst he hasn’t kept up with former teammates, Gavin has carried on playing the game he loves.
Last summer, he started playing for boyhood club Pencoed RFC.
Additionally, he delighted fans with a heartwarming flashback to his competitive years during a recent special occasion. At a unique gathering, which was a live podcast taping, he appeared wearing his vintage Wales jersey and showcased the iconic hairstyle from his 2005 Grand Slam triumph.
As an ardent admirer, let me share this: I was there, at Walkabout in Cardiff, where the one and only Gavin graced us with his presence for The Rugby Pod event. He reminisced about his remarkable career and those unforgettable off-field escapades, such as the thrilling tale of when he attempted to navigate his very own yacht from Swansea to Cardiff, just for a night on the town. Alas, the stormy seas nearly capsized the boat! Quite the adventure, don’t you think?

Currently, he feels more at ease tending bar at The Fox, reminding patrons that the allure of professional sports is no longer on his radar.
I must admit, it doesn’t truly reflect my personality. However, that seems to be part of the package when you’re a public figure in rugby. I’ve had some wonderful experiences, but it’s been refreshing to step away from all that and focus on family life and starting a business.
‘That has its own pressures, and that’s my living now.’
