Friends star Lisa Kudrow reflects on being fired from another iconic show

As a fan who has followed Lisa Kudrow’s career since her days on “Friends,” it’s fascinating to learn about her brush with another iconic sitcom, “Frasier.” Her life seems to be a series of twists and turns, like a script from one of those shows!

Friends star Lisa Kudrow has further reflected on being fired from another iconic show.

On the SmartLess podcast, I, a dedicated fan, shared an intriguing tale about my role on the show Frasier. I was initially chosen to play Roz Doyle in the pilot episode, but unfortunately, I was let go before the series took off.

In his own words, Kudrow stated that he wasn’t chosen for the part on “Frasier” – the one that eventually went to Peri Gilpin and appeared in all 11 seasons of the show – as he had been let go from the series.

In a discussion about the first episode’s rehearsal, Kudrow described it as “disappointing”. She shared that director James Burrows informed her: “This isn’t hitting the mark.”

Kudrow stated, “I was inquiring, ‘What role could I play?’ However, I suspect there was an error in casting because I appeared with Peri Gilpin on the network. I believe they were rectifying a previous oversight since Peri should’ve played Roz all along.”

Following the difficulty, Kudrow eventually secured a guest appearance on “Mad About You”. This opportunity subsequently led to her being cast as Phoebe Buffay in “Friends”, a role that was proposed for her by Jeffrey Klarik, writing partner of “Friends” creator David Crane, who had seen her potential while working on “Mad About You”.

In a reading session for Friends, Kudrow was requested to try out for Burrows, who also served as a director on the show. It wasn’t until much later, during a special event honoring Burrows’ career, that the actor discovered she was the only Friends cast member who had to audition for Jimmy Burrows.

Asked why, Kudrow said: “Because I had just gotten fired from Frasier.”

During my audition, I delivered my lines in a small room, as Kudrow described. There was a desk where Burrows sat, and I was seated elsewhere. The audition consisted of a brief monologue. After finishing, he simply said, “No notes.” At the time, I didn’t understand what that meant, and I thought to myself, “Well, I guess it’s over. I have no idea what that means. It seems like all hope is lost.”

Friends is available for streaming on Netflix in the UK, and it’s aired daily on Comedy Central there too. In the United States, you can stream the show on HBO Max.
