For a decade, the sitcom “Friends” left several questions about its characters and plots unanswered, one particularly fascinating concerning Phoebe (Lisa Kudrow). However, with the series finale, this enigma no longer requires resolution. Even twenty years after its last episode, “Friends” remains one of the most cherished and widely watched TV shows in history. The show’s availability on streaming platforms has broadened its audience, leading to numerous rewatches that have shed light on various mysteries.

In the TV series Friends, the primary characters experienced numerous challenges across various aspects of their lives over a span of 10 seasons, particularly emphasizing their romantic entanglements. The show delved into aspects of their backgrounds as well, but Phoebe’s was not only the most turbulent and sorrowful, but also the most enigmatic. Certain aspects of Phoebe’s past seemed illogical, while others remained unanswered, like the one concerning her husbands. In the fifth season of the popular sitcom ‘Friends’, the gang embarked on a trip to Las Vegas because Joey (Matt LeBlanc) was due to film a movie there. However, upon reaching the set, he discovered that filming had been postponed. Since he lacked funds to go back home, Joey found temporary employment as a gladiator at Caesar’s Palace. The rest of the group subsequently followed him to Vegas, and while Chandler (Matthew Perry) and Monica (Courteney Cox) pondered whether to tie the knot there or not, Ross (David Schwimmer) and Rachel (Jennifer Aniston), under the influence of alcohol, unexpectedly got married.

In the opening episode of Season 6, titled “The One After Vegas”, the gang grapples with Ross and Rachel’s impromptu marriage while under the influence. Phoebe and Joey missed the ceremony at the chapel, arriving too late, whereas Chandler and Monica stumbled upon them just as they were about to tie the knot. Later, a discussion ensues among Phoebe, Joey, Monica, and Chandler regarding Ross and Rachel’s sudden nuptials, with Phoebe attempting to console Rachel by stating their Vegas wedding wasn’t legitimate. Phoebe maintained that a Vegas marriage is only recognized in Vegas, but Monica corrected her, explaining that it isn’t actually the case.

Phoebe let out an exclamation of surprise, uttering “oh my God” and gazing vacantly into the distance for a moment or two, before seemingly dismissing it. It turns out that this quick yet amusing incident suggested that Phoebe had tied the knot in Las Vegas once, without going through with a divorce. However, since she ended up marrying Mike (played by Paul Rudd) smoothly later on, we can assume that she resolved that issue off-screen at some point in time.

In the sitcom “Friends”, Phoebe had tied the knot three times, however, only two of her husbands were prominently featured. One of these was Duncan (played by Steve Zahn), a Canadian figure skater who was Phoebe’s husband long before the start of season 1. He married Phoebe to secure a green card. Despite his admission that he was gay and their infrequent meetings due to his extensive travel, Phoebe still developed feelings for him. Duncan first appeared in “Friends” during its second season, returning after six years of marriage to ask Phoebe for a divorce.

Phoebe confided in Duncan that he wasn’t gay, intended to wed a woman he adored, and therefore needed a divorce. Heartstricken, Phoebe consented, and they parted amicably. Then came Mike, whom Phoebe met via Joey when he couldn’t find her a date companion. In Friends season 6, Mike and Phoebe got married in an unconventional ceremony due to a snowstorm, but it was one of the show’s most touching scenes.

Phoebe Got The Best Ending In Friends

Despite the intrigue surrounding who Phoebe’s Vegas husband might have been and the circumstances that led to their marriage, the TV show “Friends” left this mystery unsolved, given Phoebe’s contented ending. Among the six friends, Chandler and Phoebe experienced the toughest childhoods, with Phoebe’s being particularly tragic. Phoebe, along with her twin sister Ursula, was initially raised by their father, Frank, and his partner, Lily, who were in a polyamorous relationship. Unfortunately, Frank deserted them shortly after, and later, Lily married an unnamed man.

As a film enthusiast, I’d rephrase it like this: Some time after Lily took her own life, Phoebe’s stepfather wound up behind bars for reasons yet unknown. This left Phoebe without a home, and it seems that during this period, Ursula disappeared from the picture. Fast forward to years later, Phoebe found refuge with her grandmother. It wasn’t until Friends season 3 that she discovered the truth about her biological mother. To add to her journey, Phoebe experienced several unsuccessful romantic entanglements. However, tying the knot with Mike wasn’t just about finding a healthy, loving, and stable partnership – it was also about gaining a family I never had. This made for an exceptionally heartwarming ending amongst the main characters in Friends.
