Friends and Fans React to Pokémon Star Rachael Lillis’ Death at 46

As a child of the 90s who grew up with a television as my best friend, I can truly say that Rachael Lillis was more than just a voice actor to me – she was a part of my weekend rituals, my after-school escapades, and my Saturday morning adventures. Her roles in Pokémon were the soundtrack to my youth, filling our living rooms with her beautiful voice, her terrific comic timing, and her remarkable acting skills.

46-year-old voice artist Rachael Lillis, famously recognized for portraying Misty and Jessie in various Pokémon series, passed away due to breast cancer on Monday. Her friends and admirers paid tribute to her on social media, referring to her as a beloved icon.

As a devoted movie enthusiast, I’m sharing some somber news that struck our beloved movie community: My dear co-star, Veronica Taylor, who brought Ash from Pokémon to life on the small screen, announced the sad passing of our colleague, Lillis, on her platform X, earlier this Monday. In a heartfelt statement, Veronica shared that Lillis lost her battle with cancer on August 10th. Reports indicate that she was diagnosed with cancer back in May.

Lillis kicked off her journey as a voice actress during the 1990s, eventually lending her voice to characters from various TV shows, anime, and video games. Among other roles, she was also responsible for bringing characters like Misty and Jessie to life, not forgetting Jigglypuff in the famous Pokémon series.

In Taylor’s post, it was mentioned that we are all familiar with Rachel Lillis due to the diverse roles she played. She significantly enriched our weekend mornings and both pre-school and after-school hours by gracing us with her beautiful voice, exceptional comedic sense, and remarkable acting abilities.

Taylor mentioned that Lillis’ relatives express gratitude to everyone while they spend time mourning personally, and a tribute event will be arranged for a future occasion.

As a devoted cinephile, I’ve been closely following the heartbreaking news about my beloved colleague, Lillis. In May, his sister, Laurie Orr, set up a GoFundMe campaign to help cover his mounting medical expenses. Just recently, on Monday, Laurie posted an update on the page that left us all shattered. Over the past week, Lillis had started to deteriorate unexpectedly, and we are now reeling from this profound loss. We ask for understanding and tranquility as his family and I grapple with our grief during these difficult times.

As a movie-loving individual, it’s heart-wrenching for me to say goodbye to my cherished little sister. Yet, I find solace knowing she’s now free from the chains of this world. The funds we raise will help cover her outstanding medical bills, organize a fitting memorial service, and support causes that combat cancer in her memory – especially initiatives aimed at defeating this relentless foe.

Fans of the show expressed their condolences on social media on Monday.

“Farewell, Rachel Lillis. Her departure came much too early,” I wrote on X, as I shared pictures of Lillis and some beloved characters she brought to life within Pokémon.

Others shared clips of their favorite moments that Lillis’ voiced on the show.

Following the sad news about Rachael Lillis’s passing, I feel compelled to recount one of my most cherished voice acting moments from her. Her portrayal of Misty in that particular scene was simply heartrending and breathtakingly real.

“A beloved figure taken away prematurely. Rachael Lillis brought countless joyful Saturday mornings to many children, including me, as shared by voice actor Kaiji Von Tang on platform X. Her voice and the memories she created will forever be cherished.”

“I’m deeply saddened. She was not only hilarious and kind but also a wonderful friend for so long. Eric Stuart, who worked with her on the character James in Pokémon, wrote this on X: ‘Remember her life by rewatching the original Pokémon series, particularly Team Rocket episodes, as she’ll always be my co-conspirator in comedy. Farewell, my friend.'”
