Friday the 13th Spin-off Series Creator Teases ‘Rivers of Blood’

Brad Caleb Kane, the creator of the new Friday the 13th series coming to Peacock – called Crystal Lake – has shared some unsettling details about the show. He says it will be very violent, with a lot of bloodshed, and will focus on the psychological aspects of the classic horror story.

Brad Caleb Kane discusses what to expect in Crystal Lake

I’m so excited! Brad Caleb Kane, who just worked on the awesome ‘It: Welcome to Derry’ for HBO, is now tackling ‘Friday the 13th’! He recently chatted with Entertainment Weekly about his plans for the prequel series, and it sounds like he’s really diving deep into the history of the Voorhees family and how all that tragedy started at Crystal Lake. I can’t wait to see what he comes up with!

The new Friday the 13th series isn’t a typical slasher film, according to creator Kane. He explains it’s more of a psychological thriller, inspired by the paranoid thrillers of the 1970s. While it will still have the hallmarks of a slasher – including plenty of blood and creative kills – those elements serve to develop the characters, themes, and setting, rather than being the primary focus.

The film delves into complex themes because it’s heavily influenced by the time period that inspired the original 1980 movie. Director Kane wanted to explore the atmosphere of the 1970s – a time marked by paranoia, distrust of authority, and the rise of the women’s liberation movement. He aimed to incorporate these cultural elements and ideas into the prequel, creating a story that reflects that era’s anxieties and social changes.

A new Friday the 13th series will explore the backstory of Pamela Voorhees, the mother who becomes the killer in the original film, played by Linda Cardellini. Callum Vinson will portray her son, a young Jason. Director Kane highly praises Cardellini’s performance, predicting she’ll be a revelation and garner significant attention for her incredibly strong portrayal, though he remains tight-lipped about specific details.

Crystal Lake’s release date is yet to be announced.
