Friday the 13th director has hope for the franchise's future: 'There's more to come'

As a gamer with decades of horror movie marathons under my belt, I can confidently say that the return of Jason Voorhees is always a cause for excitement. The latest updates on the Friday the 13th franchise have me both eager and cautiously optimistic.

It’s been around 15 years since we last witnessed Jason Voorhees in live-action on the big screen (in the 2009 remake), but that doesn’t signal the end of the Friday the 13th universe any time soon. Much like its famous antagonist, it’s extremely challenging to permanently eliminate a successful horror franchise.

Over the weekend, the original director and producer Sean S. Cunningham participated in a convention held in Worcester, Massachusetts. There, he shared insights about the franchise and his aspirations for its continued success. Notably, Bloody Disgusting reported on these developments. As the director of the 1980 film that launched the series, alongside writer Victor Miller, Cunningham has maintained a connection to the franchise throughout the years in a producer role.

Fans of Friday the 13th series have frequently faced disappointment as a result of several issues, predominantly a prolonged legal battle regarding ownership of the franchise, hindering the production of additional films.

The Friday the 13th television series that never was

At the gathering, Cunningham disclosed that there had been an alternate series based on “Friday the 13th” in development a considerable length of time past, even before the prequel series called “Crystal Lake,” which is now being produced by A24 for Peacock.

According to the director, they had made significant progress on their previous TV show when it was put on hold indefinitely because of a legal dispute and later due to the pandemic. For further details about the aborted series, head over to Bloody Disgusting where you can learn more, such as Cunningham’s description of a scene they had envisioned for the show.

Thoughts on the Crystal Lake prequel

As a gamer, I’ve heard it straight from the horse’s mouth – according to Cunningham, the initial version of the Crystal Lake prequel series by showrunner Bryan Fuller was just too gloomy for the studio’s taste. Apparently, creative disagreements led to a split between Fuller and the studio, with a new guy named Brad Caleb Kane stepping in as the new showrunner.

A significant number of viewers expressed dismay upon Bryan Fuller’s departure from the show, as his NBC series “Hannibal” is frequently praised as a groundbreaking work in horror television. Even Mike Flanagan recently voiced regret on social media platform X (previously known as Twitter), bemoaning the fact that Fuller’s vision for the series may never materialize.

According to Cunningham, there’s a rumor that Crystal Lake may begin filming in Australia by year-end, with a possible release date for Halloween 2025. However, he cautions that this might not be entirely reliable, acknowledging “There are simply so many factors that could go awry.

There’s more to come.’

Even though numerous developments have taken place, Cunningham hints at further developments for the future of Friday the 13th and the character Jason Voorhees. This aligns with a statement he made earlier this year at Texas Frightmare Weekend, where he expressed his belief that another film might not surface until at least three years from now.

At his latest event at a convention, the movie director announced that Jason is expected to feature in additional video games due to the triumph of the 2017 title “Friday the 13th: The Game”.

Regarding bringing Jason back to the movie industry, it’s difficult to predict exactly when that might occur, but it appears that those in charge are putting forth significant efforts to make it a reality.

Meanwhile, I’m absolutely thrilled to be part of the exciting expansion of the Jason Universe by Horror Inc! With the collaboration of original writer Victor Miller and executive producer Marc Toberoff, we’re bringing this universe to life across multiple platforms. This new era will reportedly include video games, immersive experiences, merchandise, and much more, making it a dream come true for any Friday the 13th fan like myself!
