Freddie Prinze Jr. and Sarah Michelle Gellar’s enduring marriage: How two ‘dumb kids’ managed to spark one of Hollywood’s greatest love stories – as the former teen heartthrob turns 50

Freddie Prinze Jr. turned 50 on Sunday and is likely celebrating with his wife, Sarah Michelle Gellar.

This couple is famous for their lasting relationship in Hollywood and will celebrate 24 years of marriage in September.

Many were surprised their relationship lasted, especially since Freddie admitted they were both very young and naive when they first met on the set of the 1997 horror movie, I Know What You Did Last Summer.

As Freddie enters a new decade of life, the Daily Mail is revisiting his relationship with Sarah Michelle.

The movie didn’t feature the characters as they were originally written. In the film, Freddie’s character, Ray, had feelings for Julie, who was played by Jennifer Love Hewitt. Meanwhile, Helen, portrayed by Sarah, was in a relationship with Barry, played by Ryan Phillippe.

Freddie and Sarah quickly became friends, and he often gave her rides to the gym since she didn’t drive.

He told Us Weekly that they would often chat about life in general, but they had very different viewpoints on almost every topic.

She grew up in New York, and I grew up in Los Angeles, so we had very different perspectives on everything – it was like comparing night and day.

Looking back on when they first met, Freddie recently told USA Weekly they were young and in love. He explained they were both in their twenties, figuring things out and making plenty of mistakes, and they simply connected with each other.

We were already friends, so there was already a strong foundation of trust, which made the relationship really comfortable and natural.

Freddie remembered when they first started dating, thinking back to when they went to the premiere of the 2025 remake of ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ together.

He told Access Hollywood that they had been friends for about two years before they finally went on a date.

We first connected on set and quickly became close friends. Since we lived nearby, we stayed in touch, and our friendship eventually blossomed into a relationship.

Their first date was a complete coincidence. A group dinner was planned with friends, but everyone cancelled except for them, so they ended up having dinner together anyway.

Freddie explained on The Howard Stern Show that their plans for a group outing fell through, leaving only him and one other person to go.

Freddie and Sarah dated for several years and got engaged in 2001. They’ve always kept the proposal private, with Sarah explaining she preferred a more intimate moment rather than a grand, public display.

Freddie and Sarah’s relationship mirrored their work when they got engaged around the time they both landed roles in the 2002 live-action movie, Scooby Doo.

The film started shooting in February 2001 and the pair announced their engagement that April.

Freddie and Sarah portrayed one of animation’s most iconic couples: Fred Jones and Daphne Blake.

The movie earned $275.7 million, making it a commercial hit. Both leads then reprised their roles in the sequel, Monsters Unleashed, which was released two years later.

Freddie poured hot water on the idea of the couple working together again however.

He explained to ET Canada that they only collaborated while working on Scooby-Doo, and he didn’t believe they’d be a good fit for other projects together.

It’s not very compelling to watch a couple fight to connect when they ultimately end up together anyway, like going home with each other every night.

Freddie and Sarah got married in Mexico in 2002. The bride wore a strapless Vera Wang gown, and the groom wore a white linen suit by Sy Devour.

In 2009, the couple had their first child, a daughter they named Charlotte. Their son, Rocky, arrived three years later.

Sarah shared in an interview with Access that when her son, Rocky, was young, Freddie wanted to challenge traditional gender roles. He showed Rocky clips of Sarah’s iconic role as Buffy Summers in Buffy the Vampire Slayer to demonstrate that girls can be strong and capable fighters.

I came home one day and overheard my son telling someone that girls can’t fight. My son, Freddie, questioned that, asking if he was sure. Then, he showed us a YouTube video – a collection of my best fights. We told him it was actually me in the videos.

When asked about the key to a happy marriage, Sarah shared with People magazine that it’s the little things: ‘Spend just ten minutes truly connecting – put your phones away, enjoy a coffee together, take the dog for a walk, or read a bedtime story with your children,’ she said.

It’s easy to get stretched thin, so focus on what you’re doing right now and truly be present in the moment. Use your time wisely.

Last year on their anniversary, Sarah posted an old photo from their trip to Mexico, reminiscing about their special day.

She jokingly calculated her age as 23 years, which is also equivalent to 276 months, 1,196 weeks, 8,395 days, over 201,000 hours, and more than 725 million seconds, before playfully adding, ‘But who’s counting?!’
