The television series titled “Fred & Rose West: A British Horror Story” delves into the grim reality of a pair of married serial killers who committed heinous acts such as assault, rape, and murder against numerous young women and girls, including their own offspring, in the Gloucester region from 1967 to 1987.

In the year 1994, Fred and Rose West were apprehended. This occurred following the issuance of a search warrant that permitted authorities to explore their property. Fred West, accused of 12 counts of murder, took his own life in prison before his trial could commence in 1995. In contrast, Rose West is presently incarcerated for life after being found guilty on 10 counts of murder.

The Netflix documentary series consists of three episodes that delve into the West case, a chilling tale from the ’90s. It includes conversations with Fred West’s attorney, law enforcement officers, and journalists who reported on it. Discovering Fred and Rose West’s appalling child abuse

The documentary opens by revealing that detectives uncovered the remains of Heather West, one of Fred and Rose West’s ten children, at their residence. Heather vanished in 1987, and over the years following her disappearance, her parents provided contradictory accounts of her whereabouts. Eventually, in February 1994, police found Heather’s remains buried under the backyard patio of the West family home. Fred West was eventually apprehended and confessed to killing Heather during interrogations with the Gloucester police department.

In his recorded statement, he clarifies that he had no intention of causing harm to Heather. Instead, his goal was simply to convince her to remain at home.

The brutal manner in which Heather was murdered by West indicates something other than what one might initially assume. Instead of calling for help or surrendering, West butchered his own daughter using a bread knife, and then resorted to using an extension cord to strangle her, ensuring she had no chance of survival.

In a documentary, John Fitzgerald – an advisor for child protection within the government who worked with the West case – stated that the children of Fred and Rose West suffered extensive abuse at their hands. Evidence from police recordings shows Mae West, their daughter, claiming that her father Fred sexually abused both her and Heather on a daily basis. When confronted about these accusations, Fred West chose not to respond or comment.

The documentary includes old recordings of their eldest child, Stephen West, who expresses, “We found greater happiness in school because it felt secure. Compared to being at home, school was a more pleasant environment.

Stephen mentioned that Rose frequently got angry, as indicated by his statement, ‘When she started losing her cool, it seemed almost impossible for her to regain control.’

At one instance, Stephen mentioned that his girlfriend prompted him to voice his concerns, yet he along with the other kids felt apprehensive about disclosing their family situation because they feared it might lead to separation by Child Protective Services if they revealed the truth about what was happening at home.

As authorities started probing the West household due to allegations of child abuse, some of their kids revealed that a regular family jest was that any misconduct would result in them being placed under the patio, similar to what happened to Heather.

In the documentary, Fitzgerald states that the murders wouldn’t have been discovered without the West children revealing they had a sister hidden under the patio. He admires their courage for coming forward.

The experts involved believe there could be additional, unidentified victims as well. In one of the episodes, West is quoted as saying, “I haven’t and I’m still not telling you everything.

What recently discovered police recordings reveal

In 1969, when Fred West was 27 and Rose was only 15, he claimed that he controlled their relationship. He stated, “I molded Rose to suit my desires. That’s why our marriage functioned so smoothly…she simply adjusted to my lifestyle.” This is what West said in a police recording.

Under Fred’s encouragement, Rose started offering sex services within their shared home. Liz Agius, a previous neighbor, recounts in the documentary that Rose once inquired about her feelings towards Rose being a sex worker, to which Agius responded it was not any of her concern. Agius further revealed that Rose mentioned Fred had bugged the bedroom so he could eavesdrop from the adjacent room.

Rose, in a recording, expressed that she was forced to spend time with someone she disliked, ended up sleeping with them all night, and returned home the next day. Starting from 1967, Fred engaged in kidnapping, raping, and murdering no less than a dozen young women, while Rose was found guilty of committing at least 10 murders dating back to the early 1970s. Caroline Owens, a former nanny for the West family in 1972, recounts her experience in the series where Fred proposed she join a “sexual group” involving him and Rose. One day, she recalls passing out and waking up bound, blindfolded, and gagged on a mattress on the floor. As Owens states, this was when the sexual assault began. Although she feared Fred West would take her life, she managed to flee.

Fred West called her story “absolute rubbish” in an interview with police.

A different woman named Shirley Robinson entered into an affair with Fred West. It was discovered that she was pregnant with his child. When Shirley threatened to reveal this secret to Rose, who had just given birth and was in the hospital, Fred murdered her. His account of the incident can be heard in a police recording: “I simply struck her hard in the face, and she fell right down…Then I went and got some cord and tied it around her neck.

As a movie reviewer, I must say that this documentary delves into the heart-wrenching tale of Alison Chambers, a young woman who chose to leave home. Philip Davis, husband of Anne-Marie Davis (Stephen’s older sister), agreed, telling Mail Online, “Every few years, this case resurfaces in the media, such as with the recent documentary, sparking public curiosity. However, it’s the children who are left to bear the daily burden of what transpired.

In the TV show, it’s the relatives of the West’s victims who have the final say. Belinda Mott, whose sister Juanita Mott was discovered in the Wests’ cellar, is depicted visiting her sister’s grave. “That’s why I tell my kids, every time I say goodnight or goodbye, I always express my love because you never know when it might be the last time,” she says.

According to Dezra Chambers, discussing her sister Alison helped her find emotional relief. Over time, she became accustomed to isolating the crime in her mind, and she admits that she had not fully dealt with it before.

She mentions that her current actions are primarily aimed at Alison, although they also serve a personal purpose to help her find some resolution. At present, she lacks that sense of closure.
