Guillermo del Toro recently received an award for his new version of Frankenstein, which stars Jacob Elordi and Oscar Isaac, who joined him on stage. Continuing a conversation he started in an October interview, del Toro again shared his thoughts on artificial intelligence (AI). He highlighted the importance of human creativity and praised the artists he collaborated with, emphasizing that work created by people is more valuable than work made by machines.
Guillermo del Toro drops F-bomb against AI while accepting award for Frankenstein
I was so thrilled to hear that Guillermo del Toro’s upcoming ‘Frankenstein’ movie won the Vanguard Tribute Award at the Gotham Awards! It’s amazing to see his vision recognized. I heard Guillermo, along with Jacob Elordi and Oscar Isaac, accepted the award in New York City. And apparently, in his speech, he really stressed how important it is to celebrate the people who made the film – the artists – instead of relying on AI. That’s something I really appreciate hearing!
He discussed Mary Shelley, the writer of the first Frankenstein novel, pointing out that she was just 18 years old when she created it. He also highlighted how the important questions she raised in the book are still relevant and thought-provoking today, even two centuries later.
He also talked about revisiting this story later in life, saying it’s been a true honor to work with such talented artists, Oscar and Jacob, who feel like family. He admires that they don’t portray simple characters, but instead explore the complexities of being human and the universal desire for connection, especially in a world that often feels isolating and where suffering seems to only create more suffering – a situation he finds particularly relevant today, and hopes someone will address.
Del Toro paused the award ceremony to express his appreciation for the film’s cast and crew. He emphasized the human artistry visible in every scene, stating the film was intentionally created by and for people, and finished with a strong statement against artificial intelligence.
