Be warned: the following discusses major plot points from the two-part season finale of the Fox show Doc, specifically the episodes “Stuck” and “Happy Birthday.”
The medical drama ‘Doc’ on Fox is getting a significant cast change before its third season, with some actors leaving and new faces joining the show.
Inspired by the Italian series Doc – Nelle tue mani, this show follows Dr. Amy Larsen, played by Molly Parker, as she recovers from a traumatic brain injury that caused years of memory loss and tries to rebuild her life and medical career. Developed by Barbie Kligman, the series premiered in 2025 and has gradually added to its cast while weaving together compelling medical stories and personal challenges.
Following the conclusion of its second season, the show Doc is preparing for a third season with some cast changes. According to Deadline, Blair Underwood will join the cast as Dr. Ben Grant, a surgeon specializing in trauma and cardiothoracic cases. Felicity Huffman, who was a main cast member in season 2, will not be returning as a series regular.
The character of Dr. Joan Ridley, played by Huffman, was killed off after a significant story arc. According to Hank Steinberg, the show’s executive producer and co-showrunner, this outcome had been planned from the start. Here’s what he had to say:
We’re not sure if we’ll feature a major guest star every season, but Felicity was a great addition to the show. From the start, we planned for her role to last only one season. We always intended for her character to be battling an illness she kept secret, and ultimately to die heroically, providing a meaningful emotional release for Amy.
Jenna Huffman leaving the show is a major turning point, particularly because her character was a key guide and source of support for Amy during the second season.
Meanwhile, the arrival of Dr. Ben Grant, played by Underwood, is poised to dramatically change Amy’s life, both at work and personally. Though he’s first introduced as someone Amy only met at a medical conference, the season 2 finale hints at a possible past affair between them.
Things get really interesting going into season three, because Ben wasn’t just Amy’s colleague – he was the surgeon who actually saved her life, alongside Joan. That creates a fascinating mix of professional admiration, underlying tension, and a past they clearly haven’t dealt with. And the cast changes aren’t over. We’re saying goodbye to Charlotte Fountain-Jardim as a series regular; her character, Amy’s daughter Katie, is heading off to college. Thankfully, she’ll still pop up as a guest star throughout the season, which is good news for fans.
Scott Wolf, who played Dr. Richard Miller in season one and reappeared in season two, might return to the show again. This hints that the series will continue to bring back beloved characters as the story develops. According to showrunner Steinberg, they’ve deliberately left Richard’s fate uncertain. You can read his full statement below.
We’re big fans of Scott and his character, and we’re exploring possibilities for bringing him back to the show in a way that feels natural. Both we and the audience really enjoy him.
Even with significant changes happening, most of the show’s main cast will still be returning for the third season of the medical drama. The season, which will have 22 episodes, is set to delve deeper into the relationships between characters and the medical stories they face. It will also explore the consequences of Joan’s death and how Amy’s personal life is changing.
With Amy still recovering from memory loss and making choices based on what she remembers, the third season of Doc promises to be a major moment for the series. The show is evolving by saying goodbye to some characters, welcoming new faces, and balancing appearances from beloved regulars. It’s a series that consistently finds ways to refresh itself while staying true to what makes it special.
