Four Heel Turns that WWE Needs to Make Happen Soon

As a lifelong WWE fan who’s seen more than a few seasons come and go, I can confidently say that it’s high time for some fresh blood to shake things up in the ring. And by fresh blood, I mean a few well-placed heel turns!

At SummerSlam, there was significant focus on the character transformations of Damian Priest, Rhea Ripley, and potentially Roman Reigns. Some fans are humorously suggesting that Dominik Mysterio’s recent actions might be the heel turn WWE requires at this moment. Later in the week, Wes Lee also made a heel turn. It seems like there’s a shift happening across Raw, Smackdown, and NXT. Historically, WWE has leaned more towards villains, but they find themselves short on credible antagonists compared to their abundance of heroes. To address this imbalance, it appears that WWE needs to introduce four more heel characters promptly. This is because when you have too many good guys and not enough bad ones, the solution becomes clear: trade what you have for what you need.

Kevin Owens is tired of being ignored

Attempting to challenge The Bloodline in WWE has taken a heavy toll on Kevin Owens. Once a titleholder and combat sports veteran, he’s found himself repeatedly on the receiving end of beatings since his feud with Roman Reigns and Solo Sikoa began. His most significant achievement was a tag team main event, but it appears to have typecast him as a supporting character forever. Lately, he’s been assisting others and engaging in weekly brawls resembling hockey fights with various family members of Solo Sikoa. Now, he seems to be expendable backup, a role that hasn’t fared well for his past associates.

After The Bloodline situation and Logan Paul’s temporary absence, Kevin Owens, who has previously held titles of both Cody Rhodes and LA Knight, could use a fresh opportunity. Giving him a title match against Cody Rhodes post-SummerSlam on Smackdown would boost their rivalry and provide more obstacles for Cody as he prepares to face Roman Reigns again, this time solo. This also sets up Kevin Owens as a potential challenger for LA Knight later in the year.

Bianca Belair gets jealous of Jade Cargill

On Smackdown, the women’s division is buzzing with excitement, as Nia Jax holds the title after a surprising choice. Naomi, who has recently returned, and new signee Jade Cargill are rapidly rising stars. Meanwhile, Tiffany Stratton, the latest call-up from NXT and the former Miss Money in the Bank, is the biggest heel. The atmosphere is filled with novelty, but it also carries an element of uncertainty, which can be intimidating for a booker. To stabilize the division, WWE might want to introduce an established figure, but one who could bring a fresh twist to maintain the current energy. That’s where Bianca Belair comes into play.

Belair is almost reaching John Cena’s level of popularity within WWE. However, if they continue to portray her as a heroic character, it might limit her potential to evolve further. Her charm is undeniable, making this role suitable for her. Unfortunately, her gimmick has been overshadowed by her partner, Jade. It would be strategic for WWE to eventually turn Belair into a villain (heel) instead. This unexpected move would add intrigue to potential feuds and give Jade the opportunity to take on a darker role first. Additionally, transitioning Belair into a heel will allow her to develop a more edgy persona, which is essential for her future career growth in WWE.

Randy Orton goes for his greatest student

After Gunther’s triumphant King of the Ring victory, his longtime adversary Randy Orton has migrated to Raw for a highly anticipated rematch in Berlin. However, I don’t see him emerging victorious this time around. His repeated unsuccessful attempts at claiming the WWE Heavyweight championship may push him back to Smackdown, fueled by a grudge and a singular focus: his friend and protégé, Cody Rhodes. Their history is deeply rooted, as is their shared lineage in wrestling royalty. That rivalry seems predestined, and Cody requires a formidable contender on Smackdown to truly test him.

Orton vs Rhodes has been one of the dream match scenarios since Cody returned to WWE. Cody is one of the best at chasing the champion. Randy is one of the best Heel champions in WWE history. Putting the two of them into a more extended program will help the WWE Universe combat Bloodline fatigue until WrestleMania in Las Vegas. With Cody Rhodes, it is always about the story, and it is usually about the past. A story-driven look at Cody’s first attempt at WWE stardom through the eyes of his mentor would be a very ambitious bit of programming and could let the creative team flex their muscles, showing that they can tell compelling narratives outside of Roman Reigns.

Xavier Woods leaves the New Day

Admit it, things are changing, and The New Day’s era seems to be over with Big E potentially departing permanently. This shift in energy is noticeable, but the arrival of Odyssey Jones is intriguing, yet not enough on its own. However, this situation presents a fantastic opportunity for WWE to introduce a heel turn for Xavier Woods that they’ve been needing. Instead of rushing into conflict with Kingston right away, it would be unfair to their long-standing partnership. Jones doesn’t share the same history, but between his debut and the ongoing Karrion Kross feud, Xavier is poised for a run as an envious heel seeking his moment – a replica of the success he granted to his two closest friends.

Xavier Woods is a versatile individual who excels in playing villainous roles, as evidenced by his mastermind role in the original New Day trio, which functioned as antagonists. His rivalries with Odyssey Jones and later Kofi Kingston were well-executed, setting the stage for potential conflicts. Woods might even strategically turn against Big E without resorting to physical fights, thus paving his own path and potentially concluding New Day. Additionally, a heel Woods could engage in other compelling feuds, such as betraying his family and encountering Uncle Howdy’s wrath. The tag division currently has numerous underutilized teams, making this a viable option for all parties involved to grow and advance.

It is the right time for a few heel turns that WWE needs

In simpler terms, it has become predictable for WWE fans to expect a “heel turn” (a character becoming a villain) because it’s often used as an easy solution when writers aren’t sure what to do with characters. This isn’t always realistic or fair, but at the moment, there is a lack of villains in WWE, especially on SmackDown, which makes it difficult to book their World Champion, Cody Rhodes. Pairing up talentless or directionless characters as villains can be an easy solution, but deciding who should take on that role isn’t always straightforward. Some characters naturally fit the villain role, while others might thrive with a new challenge. It’s better than watching the same heroes fight the same villains week after week without any progression or change. If you can’t beat them, join them, in other words, if you can’t compete against established stars on TV, it might be beneficial to become one yourself.
