Fortnite set to return to Google Play worldwide as Epic and Google settle dispute

Story Highlights

  • Fortnite will return to the Google Play Store worldwide soon.
  • Epic Games and Google have settled their long-running dispute.

After a long legal fight, Epic Games and Google have reached a settlement. This means Fortnite will be available again on the Google Play Store for mobile players around the world, expected sometime in 2026.

Fortnite will be back on the Google Play Store, as announced by Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney. He expressed gratitude to Google and confirmed players will again be able to download the game directly through the store. Epic Games will also continue to support the Epic Games Store on Android, providing an alternative way to get the game.

Alongside Fortnite’s return, Android is introducing easier support for third-party app stores

Fortnite was taken off mobile app stores back in 2020. This happened because Epic Games, the game’s creator, set up its own way for players to buy things within the game, avoiding the usual fees charged by app stores like Apple and Google. This decision led to Fortnite being removed from both the Google Play Store and Apple’s App Store, and it started a lengthy legal dispute.

Fortnite will be available to download from the Google Play Store globally again soon. Epic Games Store will still offer Android support, in addition to Windows and Mac, and getting Fortnite on Android devices will be simpler later in 2026.

Changes started happening in 2025 due to new court decisions affecting app stores. As a result, Fortnite was back on Android devices in the U.S. through the Google Play Store in December 2025, ending a five-year wait. The game is now expected to become available on Android worldwide later this year.

In addition to the settlement, Google announced some positive changes are coming to its platform. The company emphasized that Android has always been about giving people choice and freedom, and upcoming updates will give developers more ways to share their apps and games with users on billions of devices.

A key update simplifies installing app stores from developers other than Google by streamlining the setup process. Google Play is also changing its business model, letting developers offer their own payment options in addition to Google Play Billing, and reducing the fees they pay for using the platform.

Android users and developers are currently enjoying a great experience overall, and things are likely to improve even further. With the recent legal issues nearing resolution, we can expect even better experiences on the platform soon. Stay tuned for updates on when we can expect these improvements to arrive.
