Formula 1: The next ‘understudy’ of Fernando Alonso is not who you think
As a seasoned motorsports enthusiast with decades of following Formula 1 under my belt, I can’t help but feel a pang of nostalgia for the days when young drivers were just starting their journey towards the pinnacle of racing. Pepe Marti, a Spanish gem managed by none other than Fernando Alonso himself, is one such driver who has captured my attention.
Recently, when Gabriel Bortoleto clinched the Formula 2 championship at Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi, Fernando Alonso, a two-time Formula 1 champion, was excited to offer his congratulations to one of his drivers. As the leader of the small group of drivers under Alonso’s management company, A14, Bortoleto caught Alonso’s attention.
With a 20-year-old driver named Pepe Marti gearing up for his leap into Formula 1 alongside Sauber next season, all eyes will be on his progress. Marti is poised to embark on his second year in Formula 2, aiming to secure a spot in Formula 1 by the year 2026.
2024 saw Marti’s season perform decently without any standout excellence. At just 19 years old, he kicked off his season impressively, earning a place on the podium for both the sprint and main races at Bahrain, to begin with.
Between that point and his triumph in the sprint race at Abu Dhabi, Marti endured nine withdrawals, with just a single additional podium appearance. Helmut Marko labeled him as quite prone to errors, but the 2025 season offers an opportunity for change.
Next season is all or nothing for Pepe Marti
If Marti aspires to secure a spot at Red Bull Racing in 2026, considering Yuki Tsunoda’s potential departure, the key areas Marko would focus on for improvement would be consistently better race outcomes and minimizing errors leading to retirements (Did Not Finishes).
Next year, Marti may encounter extra competition as Campos Racing plans to bring on board Arvid Lindblad, another highly regarded Red Bull junior driver. It’s expected to be a balanced contest with both drivers using identical equipment. With an extra year of racing under his belt, many anticipate that Marti will leverage this experience to advance even further.
In simple terms, for the year 2025 in Formula 2, many newcomers are expected. Achieving a top five position should be sufficient to earn a spot at RB. On the other hand, if he can’t manage such a result, it could lead to him losing Red Bull’s support and favor.
As a rising star within the Red Bull Junior Team, I can feel the weight of the talent surrounding me, all eager to make their mark. If I fail to capitalize on my current position as frontrunner, it might not sit well with Marko and Christian Horner – and that could jeopardize any chance I have of breaking into Formula 1 racing. So, the year 2025 could very well be the most pivotal year in my racing career; it’s a make-or-break moment that I must seize with both hands.
