Formula 1: The next driver up for a big-team move

As a die-hard F1 fan with years of racing knowledge under my belt, I can confidently say that Gasly’s journey has been quite the rollercoaster ride. His move to Alpine after his stint at AlphaTauri was unexpected, but his recent performances have proven that he’s a diamond in the rough.

After the 2022 Formula 1 season, when Pierre Gasly moved from AlphaTauri to Alpine, many were taken aback. Initially, it seemed that a larger leap forward was anticipated for the Frenchman, given his significant improvement in his second tenure with the team following his demotion by Red Bull during the 2019 season campaign.

However, another chance might present itself for Gasly in the near future. His time at Alpine hasn’t gone as planned, as the car’s speed and advancement have significantly fallen short. Consequently, the 28-year-old has struggled to demonstrate his true potential on the track.

When Alpine performs strongly, Gasly takes advantage, demonstrating his abilities. The last two races serve as excellent illustrations. In Brazil, a third-place finish behind teammate Esteban Ocon highlighted his exceptional wet-weather driving skills, a talent not all drivers possess. In Qatar, he delivered another impressive performance with a fifth-place finish that saw him outpace Carlos Sainz of Ferrari, who failed to overtake him despite multiple attempts.

Gasly has one final chance for a move to a big team

Pierre Gasly’s current contract was set to conclude at the close of the 2024 racing year; however, a fresh agreement extends his tenure with Alpine until the end of 2026. A promising season in 2025 and especially 2026 might position Gasly as a strong contender for a coveted spot among the top-tier teams on the track.

Based on initial signs, it appears that Lewis Hamilton might consider retirement in 2026, following a two-year stint with Ferrari. Meanwhile, potential friction between Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris at McLaren may escalate. The most significant hurdle will involve comprehending the intricacies of the 2026 Formula 1 vehicle, mastery of which would be highly beneficial.

It’s worth noting that Gasly and Charles Leclerc have a strong rapport, which is something to keep in mind. On the other hand, Ollie Bearman might also be a candidate for the second Ferrari seat if his tenure at Haas turns out successful.

It’s more probable that Gasly will join Ferrari in 2027, at least for now, compared to McLaren. But if Piastri’s aspirations continue to grow, it might compel Zak Brown to release the Australian driver, and Gasly could become a candidate for that position alongside Norris.

Despite the challenges and turmoil within Alpine, Gasly’s performance has been somewhat overshadowed. Yet, if he maintains this level of skill over the next few seasons, there’s little question that he could vie for a position on a leading team.
