Formula 1: The big mistake Toto Wolff might be making for 2025

As a dedicated Formula One fan with years of experience following the sport, I’ve witnessed Mercedes go through some turbulent times since the controversial 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. The team’s recent upgrades to the W15 have brought them back to their winning ways, with George Russell and Lewis Hamilton securing victories at Austria and Silverstone respectively.

As a dedicated fan, I’ve noticed that since last year’s contentious Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, where Lewis Hamilton missed out on his eighth world title by just a hair on the last lap, Mercedes has been grappling with constructing a race-winning car.

The latest enhancements to the W15 model have given it a striking appearance as potentially the quickest car on the racetrack. Notably, George Russell clinched victory in Austria, while Lewis Hamilton secured a win at his home race in Silverstone.

After Hamilton left the team in early February, numerous speculations arose about potential candidates to fill his position.

I’ve heard some intriguing names mentioned in the racing community lately. Among them are Carlos Sainz Jr., Valtteri Bottas, Alex Albon, and Kimi Antonelli. These drivers have gained a lot of attention and buzz.

Wolf seems determined to advance Antonelli as the replacement for the seven-time world champion’s vacated position. However, speculation about Sainz joining instead, which previously seemed unlikely, has recently emerged once more.

What does Wolff’s latest comment mean?

More recently, the head of Mercedes racing confirmed that past achievements and the current car’s performance won’t impact their decision on who to hire for the upcoming racing season.

Mercedes has made progress in identifying possible successors for Hamilton, with Antonelli being one of the contenders mentioned. However, Wolff hasn’t shared many clues about who might fill Hamilton’s seat.

Nevertheless, Wolff expressed some doubts about Sainz potentially joining the team next year, which seems at odds with his previous statement from several months ago that Sainz was no longer a contender. However, Wolff recognizes Sainz’s potential value in a tight championship fight and is considering him as an option for the upcoming season.

Recent success from Mercedes should play a role

In simpler terms, Mercedes has surpassed their win totals from the past two seasons (2022 and 2023) with their recent consecutive victories. With their design and development team hitting their stride on the W15 model, it’s likely that the W16 will also be strong contenders right out of the gate.

Before the new rules take effect in 2025, Mercedes has a last chance to contend for victory in both championships. They ought to seize this opportunity.

To achieve greater competition among the team in the year 2025, it is essential for them to carefully prepare and field two skilled and experienced drivers. Ignoring their recent advancements could prove detrimental.

George Russell possesses the necessary skills, and his teammate similarly ought to have those abilities. However, for Antonelli’s sake, it would be wise to allow him more time to grow before entering Formula 1, or ideally, before joining a top-tier team.

A more suitable match for the British driver would be Sainz, who hasn’t signed a contract yet, contrary to rumors of progressing negotiations with Sauber/Audi and Williams.

As the summer break approaches, intense contract talks are set to begin for drivers yet to secure seats for the 2025 season. There’s a strong possibility that Sainz is aiming for a position at Mercedes, possibly on a temporary basis. Between him and Antonelli, they appear to be the remaining contenders for Russell’s teammate role. The upcoming developments in this situation over the next month are sure to keep us engaged.
