Formula 1 sponsor uses driver data to generate 'unique' musical track

As a longtime F1 enthusiast, I must say that this partnership between Hyland and Stake F1 Team Sauber with Valtteri Bottas is nothing short of brilliant! The “Flight of the Valtteri” track, created using Bottas’ biometric data from high-speed racing, showcases a unique blend of technology, music, and adrenaline that truly resonates with the spirit of Formula 1.

Stake F1 Team Kick Sauber sponsor Hyland always goes all out for the United States Grand Prix at Circuit of the Americas, and even that statement may be selling the Westlake, Ohio-based software company short ahead of this weekend’s race.

Hyland and Sauber’s driver Valtteri Bottas, who entered into a partnership with the brand prior to his first season with Sauber in 2022, have unveiled a fresh electronic music track titled “‘Valtteri’s Flight’“. This exhilarating piece was crafted using authentic biometric data gathered from Bottas during races at Thunderhill Raceway in Willows, California, where he exceeded 100 miles per hour.

Each day, Hyland deals with vast amounts of data. They linked Bottas to sensors that tracked various athletic metrics, including heart rate, brain activity, perspiration levels, and respiratory rates. In his natural element, pushing the limits with high-speed driving, provided the company with the required data for their analysis.

A team of skilled music creators, specializing in production and composition, utilized the data and crafted a song that embodied the pace, excitement, and feelings encountered by expert racers, adding their distinctive touch.

Flight of the Valtteri

Bottas discussed extensively with Beyond the Flag regarding the collaboration with Hyland, detailing their joint endeavors to bring this distinctive concept to fruition.

The concept originated from Hyland, and upon hearing it, I was genuinely impressed, saying to myself, ‘that’s amazing!’ Admittedly, I wouldn’t have thought of that idea independently. Following this, we began discussing the practicalities of implementing it.

In the heart of summer, I jet-setted for a single day, determined to seize an opportunity. The destination? A race track, where Hyland meticulously monitored my physiological responses, all while I pushed myself to the limit on the track, speeding as fast as my reflexes allowed.

“From all the data points, they managed to turn that, with professional people, into a soundtrack basically, which really, for me, represents speed and adrenaline rush, and kind of the emotions that you feel in the car, which are sometimes quite hard to describe.”

Bottas, who is enthusiastic about various genres of music, got a chance to listen to the song prior to its public release.

Valtteri Bottas shared that he listens to a wide range of music, depending on his mood. If he wants to get energized, he opts for faster-paced tunes. On the other hand, when he wants to unwind, he prefers jazz. He’s always open to discovering new tracks as well, so if he wasn’t part of this song, he’d be eager to give it a listen, as it sounds unique.

This soundtrack is quite exceptional; I wouldn’t compare it to a standard one. What makes it unique to me is that it carries meaning. The way it was produced is fascinating because most of the sounds come from my body and the car, combined. With repeated listening, you begin to discern the various elements of the track, and as you do, you feel a deeper connection to it, understanding that it mirrors the speed and adrenaline.

In my third year partnering with Hyland, I must admit, this creative journey we’re on together ranks as my absolute favorite collaboration. With ten Grand Prix wins under my belt and a history as a world championship runner-up, I can confidently say that this partnership feels like the perfect match.

Our partnership has been fantastic, we’ve accomplished some amazing things together, and I must admit that this particular project, so far, is my most cherished joint effort.

Bottas previews United States Grand Prix

Prior to the highly anticipated Hyland’s hometown race, one of the most eagerly awaited and challenging events on the schedule, Bottas shared his ambition to secure Sauber their initial points of the 2024 season at the 5.515-kilometer Austin, Texas road circuit, featuring twenty turns.

He mentioned that he’s looking forward to the upcoming weekend, as it’s another busy racing period offering two chances. Additionally, they’ve recently made some improvements in their vehicle for this race, and there are more enhancements coming up later. He’s optimistic about these changes taking effect soon, although a confirmation is yet to be received for the Vegas event, so he remains hopeful.

2022 and 2023 US Grand Prix saw more lead switches than any other race, making it an intense spectacle. The struggle for position in the middle pack was equally tight, offering Sauber additional motivation that they might, at last, manage to score points this week.

Every weekend, I’m aiming to turn our bad luck around and boost my performance, hoping to secure those much-needed points. That’s what I’ve got to focus on now.

In the past two years, the U.S. Grand Prix, where Bottas clinched victory with Mercedes in 2019, has attracted over 430,000 spectators during race weekends. It’s projected that a similar number will attend in 2024. As Formula 1’s popularity in the U.S. continues to grow, this event has emerged as one of the most significant on the annual calendar.

Bottas commented, “I can confirm that change has been significant since my debut in 2013. Formula 1’s fanbase has expanded enormously, making a noticeable impact on the popularity of the sport. This weekend, you can witness the transformation over the years, even within the city itself. The track definitely merits its spot on the calendar. It’s incredibly exciting, and the quality of racing is usually top-notch. Now, the energy from the fans adds to the overall experience, making it a truly enjoyable event for me.
