Formula 1: Sky Sports set for broadcast booth change at Singapore

As a devoted Formula 1 enthusiast with over two decades of racing passion under my belt, I can wholeheartedly attest to David Croft’s indispensable role in Sky Sports‘ F1 coverage. His signature “it’s lights out and away we go!” has been the starting gun for countless thrilling races, and his insightful commentary has enriched our viewing experience more than a pit stop can refuel a car.

As we approach the 2024 Formula 1 season, marking its 13th year since Sky Sports took over the broadcasting rights for Formula 1 races, their primary commentator, David Croft, has been a consistent presence at every one of the 243 Grand Prix broadcasts that Sky Sports has produced.

However, his winning run stopped at number 249, as another racer, Harry Benjamin, took over for the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix held at the Imola Circuit in May instead.

During the historic 24-race season, Crofty took his first of three planned breaks. He was absent for the Austrian Grand Prix and the preliminary sprint race at Red Bull Ring in late June. Instead, Benjamin stepped up to fill in for him in the Sky Sports F1 Kids broadcast.

Last weekend, I found myself watching the Azerbaijan Grand Prix at Baku City Circuit from the sidelines, as Croft was unable to race. Stepping into those formidable shoes once more, Benjamin delivered another impressive performance.

David Croft back after third missed Formula 1 race

Much like following his initial two absences this year, a great number of Formula 1 enthusiasts are looking forward to the popular Sky Sports play-by-play commentator making his way back to the commentary box.

Before 2024, Croft had been part of the Formula 1 broadcasting scene for a period of 26 years, and he had only once failed to attend a race. This rare occurrence happened during the European Grand Prix at the Nürburgring in 2007, which he missed due to the birth of his son.

This Sunday, Croft is coming back for the Singapore Grand Prix, and spectators will hear his familiar exclamation “Here we go!” as the 62-lap race gets underway on the Marina Bay Street Circuit in Singapore. The temporary track spans 19 turns over a distance of approximately 3.07 miles (4.941 kilometers).

In the upcoming six races of the 2024 schedule, Croft will be the primary commentator, as he has no further scheduled absences for the remainder of the season.

Tune in to the Singapore Grand Prix live on ESPN from Marina Bay Street Circuit, starting at 7:55 a.m. ET this Sunday, September 22. Begin your free trial with FuboTV today and catch all the action!
