Formula 1: Rumored fundamental change rejected for 2025

As a long-time Formula 1 fan and avid gamer of the official Formula 1 video game, I have witnessed the evolution of the sport’s scoring system over the years. The recent rumors of a potential change to award points to the top 12 finishers instead of just the top 10 seemed intriguing at first, as it could potentially add more excitement and competitiveness in the midfield battle.

Since the addition of sprint racing in Formula 1 in 2021 and the introduction of bonus points for fastest lap finishers within the top 10 during the 2019 season, there has been no significant alteration to the scoring system introduced since the year 2010.

In Formula 1 racing, the first ten finishers earn points. The point system is currently set up as 25 for first place, 18 for second, 15 for third, and so on, down to 1 point for tenth place. Before the year 2010, only the top eight racers received points, with a different scale of 10, 8, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, and 1 points respectively.

Discussions arose about potential modifications to the current point system as early as 2025, proposing that the top 12 drivers receive points rather than just the top 10.

New scoring system for Formula 1 in 2025?

If I were a fan looking back at the race results, I’d say that the points for the top seven racers wouldn’t have changed. However, things would have looked different for positions eight through 12. The eighth-place finisher would have earned five points instead of the usual four. Similarly, the ninth place finisher would have gotten four points instead of the meager two they originally received. And the 10th place racer would have walked away with three points, rather than just one. As for the 11th and 12th place finishers, they would have scored something – two points for the 11th place finisher and one point for the 12th.

In the latest FIA F1 Commission gathering, all ten sports teams strongly objected to the proposed modification of the scoring system. Consequently, the current system will persist for a sixteen-year run in the upcoming season.

Earlier in the season, there were rumors about changes coming, sparked by discussions regarding an expanded scoring system intended to motivate midfield teams. This could be particularly significant if a top 10 finish seemed unattainable for them.

In the last 14 races, only one non-top four team has managed to score points. Surprisingly, on five of those instances, Aston Martin, currently fifth in the constructor standings, was outperformed by a team ranking below them.

During this period, the teams ranked from sixth to ninth have scored more goals than Aston Martin in each of their encounters, and three out of these four teams have accomplished this feat or tied with Aston Martin in several matches.

Even though it’s been determined that the top four teams will advance, the recent struggles in the midfield have shown that adjusting the scoring system wasn’t necessary.
