Formula 1: Qatar Grand Prix not being broadcast on ESPN
As a seasoned gamer with a knack for Formula 1 racing, I can’t help but feel a tad disappointed that this weekend’s Las Vegas Grand Prix wasn’t broadcast on ABC like its compatriots. But alas, ESPN2 it is! It’s been quite the journey following the races, hopping between ESPN and ABC like a remote-controlled car, and I must admit, I’ve gotten rather good at it.
Over the weekend, the Las Vegas Grand Prix aired live on ESPN instead of ABC, making it the unique among the three U.S. races and the sole one out of the five North American races broadcasted on a different network.
2024’s Formula 1 season finale, the Las Vegas Grand Prix in its second year, marked the last race broadcasted by ESPN. Coming up this weekend is the Qatar Grand Prix at Lusail International Circuit, followed by the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix at Yas Marina Circuit, both events will air live on ESPN2.
ESPN2’s most recent race was the Sao Paulo Grand Prix at Interlagos Circuit in early November. ABC’s five-race portion of the broadcast schedule wrapped up in the Mexico City Grand Prix at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez one week prior.
Qatar Grand Prix not being shown on ESPN
In the US, regardless of whether a race is broadcasted on ESPN, ESPN2, or ABC, it will feature identical live coverage from Sky Sports. This coverage will air without commercial interruptions, which is made possible by Mercedes-Benz.
On this coming Sunday, we have the third race of the season’s third tripleheader, which is also the third Qatar Grand Prix. This event will take place at the 16-turn, approximately 5.381-kilometer long road course situated in Lusail, Al Daayen, Qatar.
2021 marked the debut of a new track on the schedule, replacing some that had been taken off due to COVID-19 limitations on events.
Afterward, a 10-year contract was finalized, but unfortunately, the track didn’t make a comeback on the calendar in 2022. The reason being that the country hosted the FIFA World Cup that year, which prevented its inclusion. However, the venue reappeared on the schedule in 2023 and will continue to be there until 2032.
Listen in to ESPN2 this coming Sunday, December 1st at 10:55 a.m. Eastern Time for the live telecast of the Qatar Grand Prix from Losail International Circuit. The current four-time world champion Max Verstappen is the defending winner of this race, while Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton claimed victory in 2021.
