Formula 1: Primary candidate ruled out for Cadillac seat in 2026?

Looking back on the racing scene post-2024 Singapore Grand Prix, it appears Daniel Ricciardo’s Formula 1 journey has taken a new turn. Known for his charisma, I, as a fan, was deeply saddened when he was replaced by Liam Lawson at RB, effectively severing ties with the Red Bull family that had been his racing home. This decision left many of us feeling a bit blue.

Previous reports for several months suggested that Ricciardo might take over Sergio Perez’s spot alongside Max Verstappen at Red Bull. However, Perez was later replaced by Liam Lawson for the year 2025 just a few weeks ago. This recent development has made it seem that Ricciardo is no longer keen on rejoining Formula 1, despite initial indications of his interest in Cadillac’s offer.

In 2023, when Daniel Ricciardo rejoined the Red Bull team, Christian Horner and Helmut Marko had initially expected a higher level of performance from him. However, according to reports, his performance didn’t meet those expectations entirely. While he did deliver some strong performances, it was also challenging for him as the RB car wasn’t the fastest on the track.

Ricciardo would have been a great starting option for Cadillac.

After the conclusion of the penultimate Singapore Grand Prix last season, whispers about Daniel Ricciardo possibly rejoining Formula 1 in 2026 started circulating. With Cadillac’s participation on the grid being confirmed, thereby increasing the series to 22 cars, Ricciardo was one of the initial drivers suggested for their inaugural driver lineup.

It’s reasonable to assume that Cadillac would begin with a robust roster, but the alleged contenders wouldn’t even position them in the thick of the midfield fight. Establishing a strong base initially as a new Formula 1 team could pave the way for greater achievements down the line.

As a devoted racing enthusiast, I can’t help but appreciate Daniel Ricciardo’s 14-year tenure in Formula 1. His wealth of experience could significantly contribute to Cadillac in crafting an exceptional vehicle throughout the season. Moreover, he’s not only a skilled driver but also one of the most adored and recognized figures in the global racing community. Having Ricciardo on board could potentially broaden Cadillac’s fanbase, boosting their brand recognition even more, especially through the influential sponsors that the Aussie attracts.

The main issue was Ricciardo’s reluctance to return.

Although Ricciardo has reinforced his intention of possibly returning to Formula 1 with Cadillac, there’s a chance they may intensify their efforts to get him back over the next few months.

Considering the allegedly non-existent communication between Ricciardo and Red Bull during his last Grand Prix weekend, it’s plausible that he harbors resentment at this moment. However, that sentiment might soften over time.

Moving Daniel Ricciardo to Cadillac might have had a significant impact like Michael Schumacher’s comeback with Mercedes in 2010. To put it another way, if Ricciardo performed well over a couple of seasons, he could have drawn in a promising young driver much the same as when Lewis Hamilton took over from the seven-time world champion in 2013.

Despite the many benefits Cadillac stood to gain by recruiting Ricciardo, it remains uncertain if he will choose to race again in a new league. More information on this matter may emerge in the upcoming months.
