Formula 1: New candidate emerging for second Audi seat?

As a Formula 1 enthusiast with decades of passion for the sport under my belt, I must say, the upcoming 2025 season is shaping up to be quite intriguing. With Nico Hulkenberg returning to Sauber and Audi taking over, the stage is set for a fresh start – but who will join him?

Following the acquisition of Nico Hulkenberg for the 2025 Formula 1 season, Sauber has been considering several potential teammates for the German driver.

Losing Carlos Sainz Jr., who we had been connected to for the past season, definitely set our team back. At present, our choices appear quite restricted, with only a handful of viable contenders available.

Starting from 2026, Mattia Binotto has been named as the new leader for Audi’s Formula 1 endeavors, giving him the authority to determine who will be Nico Hulkenberg’s teammate in the upcoming racing season.

At present, Valtteri Bottas, who’s currently driving for Sauber, is widely seen as the front-runner. Ferrari’s Binotto has also mentioned Theo Pourchaire and Gabriel Bortoleto as potential alternatives.

A fourth driver could be considered

This year, Sauber has faced significant difficulties, making them the sole team without a single point scored thus far. Such disappointing results have raised worries at Audi, which underscores the importance of securing a strong driving duo for future competitions.

Despite little information being shared regarding other potential drivers, Franco Colapinto is someone worth watching closely in the upcoming months.

In Formula 1, the Argentinian driver, Colapinto, had an impressive first appearance, stepping in for Williams when they asked him to replace Logan Sargeant. His drive at Monza was exceptional, culminating in a 12th place finish, and he moved ahead of Bottas in the drivers’ standings after just one race.

As a gaming enthusiast, I find myself in a similar situation when a new season rolls around, and my spot on the team isn’t guaranteed anymore. Just like Colapinto, who seems to be facing uncertainty about his future with the Williams team beyond this year, given that they have confirmed Sainz and Alex Albon as their drivers for the upcoming seasons. It’s tough not knowing what lies ahead, but I guess we just have to play the game as it unfolds.

If he continues to perform well throughout the final eight races of the 2024 season, Binotto might discuss the possibility of borrowing James Vowles to team up Colapinto with Hulkenberg for the 2025 season.

Although no definitive evidence points towards Colapinto joining Sauber for the upcoming season, this possibility could grow stronger over time. A major condition, however, is that Binotto and Vowles come to an agreement allowing Colapinto to rejoin Williams if either Albon or Sainz are unable to compete in a race. Regardless, it would be thrilling to witness him as a full-time driver on the grid next season.
