Formula 1 needs to make a crucial decision soon, before it's too late

As a seasoned gamer who has spent countless hours racing virtual Formula 1 cars, I can confidently say that the real-life Formula 1 is just as thrilling and competitive. The struggle for a single seat in this sport mirrors the fight for that elusive victory lap in my favorite racing games – it’s nail-biting stuff!

Formula 1 is often regarded as the peak of automotive racing, and this is evident in the intense rivalry among drivers striving for a single spot on the grid.

In certain instances, some drivers are swapped out for others who are already prepared to take over, similar to Logan Sargeant being replaced by Franco Colapinto this season and Nyck de Vries by Daniel Ricciardo last season. Occasionally, highly talented young racers like Theo Pourchaire may not even be given the opportunity to race in Formula 1.

The FIA hasn’t definitively excluded the possibility of increasing the number of teams from 10, but any potential newcomer should add value to Formula 1 and offer more advantages than not joining.

Recently, Andretti Global’s application to join the racing grid was turned down, as many believe they wouldn’t initially offer strong competition. Moreover, existing teams are hesitant about widening the grid because it could lead to a reduction in individual team prize money.

Formula 1 expansion must happen soon

One key factor leading to the rejection of Andretti Global was General Motors’ inability to provide their engines until the year 2028, which meant that Michael Andretti’s team would have to serve as a customer team for at least two seasons initially. This requirement implies that teams aiming to join the grid must already possess a Formula 1 engine from the outset.

The process could become more efficient with the abundance of drivers at hand. New teams might be encouraged to join the sport if they can benefit from the success of established drivers immediately.

Two latest Formula 2 title holders, Pourchaire and Felipe Drugovich, haven’t had an opportunity in Formula 1 as yet. Liam Lawson is still Red Bull’s reserve driver this season, despite his impressive performances when he temporarily replaced the injured Ricciardo in 2023. Mick Schumacher has been suggested for multiple seats, but he’s still without one since being released by Haas in 2022.

As a gamer, it feels like a missed opportunity when there are so many talented racers out there, yet they’re not given a shot at the big leagues – Formula 1. Expanding the grid seems like a no-brainer, both for the drivers who deserve a chance to shine and for us, the fans, who crave more excitement on the track. It’s hard not to see it as unfair that these talented individuals have to climb up through various racing series just to be left out of F1.

It’s being speculated that several possible teams might emerge and submit bids to join within the coming years. One such prospective team, rumored to be spearheaded by Otmar Szafnauer, is believed to have U.S. origins and may later put forth a bid for entry.

As numerous entities express their desire to participate in Formula 1, an expansion could open up chances for several talented drivers who have earned a spot on the team. With prospective new teams being motivated to enter as factory teams, it’s hoped that we can return the grid to having 12 teams and 24 drivers soon.
