Formula 1: Mercedes have another talented junior (and it's not Antonelli)

As a seasoned gamer of virtual racetracks and a fervent follower of Formula 1, I must say that the name Kenzo Craigie has piqued my interest more than a freshly polished Ferrari on pit row. The kid’s meteoric rise in karting is reminiscent of a rocket blasting off from the launchpad, and his accolades have already caught the eye of none other than the great Lewis Hamilton himself!

14-year-old British racing driver, Kenzo Craigie under Mercedes’ junior program, has been creating a stir in the British karting circuit over recent seasons. Notably, this young talent has garnered international acclaim, with notable recognition coming from fellow Brit and Formula One racer, Lewis Hamilton.

More recently, Craigie concluded his 2024 racing season on a triumphant note by clinching the X30-J championship title at the IAME World Finals. This victory marked his second karting title that he secured in the same year.

14-year-old prodigy has demonstrated his skills so far and is garnering a lot of attention and anticipation, much like Kimi Antonelli has over recent seasons. Like Antonelli, this young Italian driver has quickly advanced through the racing tiers, bypassing Formula 3 entirely, and landing a spot in Formula 1 at only 18 years old as a replacement for Hamilton on Mercedes’ team.

Craigie shows exceptional potential, primarily because he’s the unique driver to simultaneously possess both the FIA Junior OKJ and IAME Junior X30 World championship titles. The Junior OKJ karting competition is highly esteemed, having been contested by numerous renowned drivers like Michael Schumacher, Fernando Alonso, Charles Leclerc, and Max Verstappen in the past.

Craigie has the potential to reach the top

In the future, Craigie still faces a considerable journey before reaching Formula 1. At present, having celebrated his fourteenth birthday, he needs to compete in international karting championships that he has yet to master. However, once he turns fifteen in 2026, which is the minimum age for participation in British Formula 4, things will begin to move forward.

If Craigie’s racing skills shine in single-seater competitions, Mercedes might get an impressive demonstration of his abilities. If Craigie can perform at a level similar to or even surpassing what Antonelli achieved during his younger years, it would not be unexpected if he advances from Formula 3 straight to Formula 2 as well.

Craigie shows remarkable skill, consistently outperforming others in the junior go-kart racing scene. It’s clear that Mercedes has yet another promising young racer under their wing, one who holds immense potential to ascend the ranks and potentially compete in Formula 1 within a few years.
