Formula 1: Mercedes facing championship elimination in Mexico City

As a lifelong Formula 1 fan who has witnessed the Silver Arrows dominate the circuit for almost a decade, it’s been a tough season to swallow. I remember the days when Mercedes seemed unbeatable, racking up title after title. But this year, they’re facing elimination in the Mexico City Grand Prix, a far cry from their past glory days.

In the extraordinary 2024 Formula 1 season with a record-breaking 24 races, Mercedes has managed to win three times by the end of race 19. Remarkably, this is triple their total from both the 2022 and 2023 seasons combined. However, this impressive victory count doesn’t tell the whole story because they are on track for their lowest position in the constructor championship since 2012.

Back in 2012, I was part of the team that fought our way to fifth position in the racing season. Proudly standing alongside me were none other than seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher and the future world champion, Nico Rosberg, with us in the W03.

In 2013, they came second in their competition, followed by an impressive streak of eight consecutive victories from 2014 to 2021. Although they only won one race in 2022, they still managed to secure third place. Even though they didn’t win any races in 2023 for the first time since 2011, they ended up finishing second instead.

This season, they currently hold the fourth spot in the constructor rankings. They’re quite far behind teams like McLaren, Red Bull, and Ferrari in this competition. They are currently 200 points behind McLaren at the top, with five regular races and two additional sprint races still to go on the calendar.

As a result, the Silver Arrows are facing elimination in the Mexico City Grand Prix.

For the remaining part of the season, each construction team has a chance to earn 250 points from races like the one this Sunday afternoon on the 17-turn, 2.674-mile (4.303-kilometer) Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez road course located in Mexico City, Mexico.

As a racing enthusiast, I’m excited about the point distributions for the upcoming races! In Mexico, there are 44 points up for grabs. The sprint weekend in Brazil offers 59 points. The same goes for Las Vegas and Qatar. Lastly, the Abu Dhabi season finale presents another opportunity to earn 44 points. Can’t wait to see who takes the lead!

Following the Mexico City Grand Prix, only a total of 206 points are available for competition. This means that Mercedes needs to stay no more than 206 points behind the leader in order to continue being eligible for the championship.

With only five races remaining in the season, any team has a chance to clinch the win-tiebreaker. Right now, Red Bull is leading with seven wins this year, closely trailed by McLaren with five, Ferrari with four, and Mercedes with three.

At FanDuel Sportsbook, the Mercedes team is ranked fourth in odds to claim the world constructor championship title, with a chance of +34000. On top of that list are McLaren, who have the best chances at -600, followed by Ferrari with odds of +500 and Red Bull at a chance of +1200.
