Formula 1: Lewis Hamilton decision not just about one rumored factor

When Lewis Hamilton switched teams from McLaren to Mercedes in 2013, some believed it could mark the end of his Formula 1 career due to his impressive performance at McLaren. Yet, it soon transformed into a remarkable chapter.

Over the course of six world championship titles and an impressive streak of eight consecutive constructor championships, Lewis Hamilton has solidified his position as one of the most outstanding drivers in Formula 1 by demonstrating the best collaboration between a driver and constructor ever witnessed in the sport’s history.

Near the conclusion of his time at Mercedes, Hamilton encountered challenges with his employment agreement. Instead, he opted for brief contracts such as the two-year deal he sealed in 2023, granting both him and Mercedes the right to terminate the contract prematurely following a single season.

2024 rolled around, and one season was all it took for me, the racing legend, to make my shockwave-inducing move to Ferrari. Announced in early February, this decision left the world reeling. At 40, I yearned to conclude my career by realizing a lifelong dream, but it was Mercedes who decided against keeping me on as a brand ambassador. On the other hand, Ferrari wasted no time in fulfilling my heart’s desire.

The seven-time world champion’s move is about more than just an ambassador role.

Following the 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, where Max Verstappen passed him at turn five on the last lap and clinched the world championship, it was evident that Hamilton was determined to be more formidable in future seasons, having suffered a painful title loss.

Prior to the 2022 racing season, significant rule adjustments were implemented, indicating that Mercedes’ design strategy may not have been suitable for another world title challenge. The excessive “porpoising” of the W13 model was particularly noticeable and wasn’t effectively addressed until near the end of the season.

In 2023, similar problems recurred, even though W14 was somewhat stronger. However, it was far from the level of competition Hamilton had experienced with Silver Arrows. Being in a non-competitive car, yet capable of vying for an eighth world championship, may have contributed to his frustration.

It’s evident that he aims for his eighth championship title. Since Mercedes hasn’t been able to provide him with the necessary resources to reach this goal, he felt compelled to seek a change. As Toto Wolff recalls, matters took a downturn during the off-season following the 2023 season, as Hamilton expressed his intention to switch to Ferrari in 2025.
