Formula 1: Las Vegas Grand Prix not being broadcast on ABC

As a long-time Formula 1 enthusiast with a penchant for North American races, I must say this season has been nothing short of thrilling! With ABC graciously providing live coverage for five races, including the Miami and US Grand Prix, it felt like a dream come true. However, the sudden shift to ESPN for the Las Vegas Grand Prix leaves me feeling a tad disoriented – much like a racecar driver trying to navigate an unfamiliar track!

In the year 2024, the opening two Formula 1 races held in the United States were broadcast live on ABC. These races included the Miami Grand Prix held at Miami International Autodrome in May and the United States Grand Prix at Circuit of the Americas in October.

As a gamer, I’ve got to say, it was a treat to catch the Canadian Grand Prix at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in June and the Mexico City Grand Prix at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez in October right here on ABC. The only race that didn’t make its way to North America this season was the Monaco Grand Prix at Circuit de Monaco, which I watched back in May.

Over the upcoming weekend, Formula 1 will hold its fifth North American competition and third U.S. event of an exceptional 24-race 2024 season. The Las Vegas Grand Prix is slated for a Saturday evening (Sunday morning, Eastern Time) at the Las Vegas Strip Street Circuit. However, this race will not air on ABC.

Las Vegas Grand Prix not being shown on ABC

After five races from ABC’s 2024 broadcast schedule have been completed, this 50-lap race taking place at the 14-turn, 3.8-mile (6.116-kilometer) temporary street circuit in Las Vegas, Nevada is slated as the final live event on ESPN for the season, marking the conclusion of the racing season.

ESPN last aired a race approximately two months ago, with the subsequent three events airing on either ABC or ESPN2 instead. The latest race broadcasted by ESPN was the Singapore Grand Prix held at Marina Bay Street Circuit on Sunday, September 22.

Live on ESPN2, the final two races of the season – the Qatar Grand Prix at Lusail International Circuit on the 1st of December and the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix at Yas Marina Circuit on the 8th of December – will be broadcasted.

It’s important to note that regardless of whether a race airs on ESPN, ESPN2, or ABC in the U.S., Sky Sports will offer the same coverage – and courtesy of Mercedes-Benz, this coverage will be commercial-free.

A full race starting lineup can be found here.

Listen to ESPN at 12:55 a.m. Eastern Time on Sunday, November 24 for the live telecast of the Las Vegas Grand Prix from the Las Vegas Strip Circuit. Max Verstappen, three-time consecutive world champion and racing for Red Bull, won last year’s inaugural race, and he has the opportunity to secure his fourth straight title this weekend.
