Formula 1: Lando Norris suddenly on the brink of elimination

As a seasoned gamer of Formula 1 races, I’ve seen my fair share of nail-biting finishes and unexpected twists, but this year’s championship battle between Lando Norris and Max Verstappen has got to be the most exhilarating yet!

In the Formula 1 World Championship, Lando Norris from McLaren found himself 47 points behind Max Verstappen of Red Bull following their race at the Interlagos Circuit. Last week in Mexico, he managed to narrow the gap by earning 10 points against his rival.

In the Sao Paulo sprint race, Norris managed to reduce Verstappen’s lead by an additional three points. This was possible when teammate Oscar Piastri moved aside to let Norris take the victory, while Verstappen was penalized and dropped from third to fourth place. The penalty was issued because Verstappen was found too close to Piastri before the virtual safety car restart.

As a gamer, I found myself in a real pickle during Q2. The red flag tripped me up, pushing me down to a disappointing 12th position on the leaderboard. To add salt to injury, I was already facing a five-position grid penalty due to an engine swap. It’s starting to look like a tough race ahead!

In the session, Norris, who initially struggled and just managed to qualify for the second round, significantly improved his performance and ultimately secured the pole position.

Once more, Norris surrendered his lead from the pole position at the start, handing it over to George Russell of Mercedes. Unfortunately, he wasn’t able to regain it. Moreover, an inconveniently timed red flag didn’t aid his efforts after he had already stopped for fresh tires.

In contrast, Verstappen started from the 17th spot on the starting grid, but thrived in the rainy conditions, eventually taking the lead. He went on to win the race by over 19 seconds, marking his eighth triumph of the season and his first victory since June.

Verstappen’s 62nd career victory has been largely considered the best drive of his Formula 1 career.

Despite being the pre-race front runner, Norris experienced several trips off the track, ultimately resulting in a sixth-place finish. This outcome was once more influenced by team orders, which moved Piastri from ahead of Norris.

On a day where he initially led Verstappen by 25 points, he ultimately fell behind by 18 points in the race against his championship opponent.

It’s possible that Sky Sports were correct when they predicted this race could be a pivotal moment in the world championship fight, but not quite as anticipated. Contrary to their expectations, Lando Norris began 16 positions ahead of Max Verstappen, only to end up five spots behind him at the finish line.

In my gaming world, I’m trailing by 62 points as we approach the final three races in Las Vegas, Qatar, and Abu Dhabi, with a sprint race in Qatar still to go.

For every driver, there are still 86 points up for grabs during the remainder of the 2024 racing season. Race victories will earn 25 points, and an extra point is awarded to the driver who sets the quickest lap (as long as they finish within the top 10). Moreover, sprint wins are worth eight points each.

Following the Las Vegas Grand Prix, the tally falls to 60. Verstappen has secured the advantage in the tiebreaker against Norris, having achieved eight victories this season. With Norris having only three wins, he won’t surpass Verstappen in that category before the end of the season.

As a result, Norris needs to be within 59 points of Verstappen, not just 60, leaving Las Vegas.

In eight out of the 21 races this season, Norris has scored at least three points more than Verstappen. This includes five of the last seven races. However, Norris hasn’t managed to score more than 15 points over Verstappen in any race, and he currently needs an average of 21 points per race to win the world championship.

At FanDuel Sportsbook, Max Verstappen is heavily favored with odds of -6000 to claim the championship title, while Lando Norris has odds of +1800 for a victory.

Odds and availability are always subject to change.

Countdown’s on! I can hardly contain my excitement as we approach the 2024 Formula 1 Las Vegas Grand Prix, streaming live on ESPN from the electrifying Las Vegas Strip Circuit at 12:55 a.m. ET on Sunday, November 24. Will Max Verstappen etch his name in history books yet again and clinch his fourth world championship title? Let’s find out together!
